Why the diesel??? Why not?!?!
I started with a diesel Wrangler, my wife liked it so much she wanted one. So I let her have mine and took her car and traded it for a diesel Gladiator. So in reality, I only got a diesel cause that's what the Wrangler was. That way we could match.
Now, I got a diesel Wrangler cause I actually felt it rode better on the highway than the gas motor. The extra power was mostly a bonus. The 2.0, 4xe weren't an option in my book and the 392 was ridiculously priced. 3.0 diesel or 3.6 gasser was all that was left. My mom has the 3.6 so I've been around it plenty, while it's not a bad motor I prefer the characteristics of the diesel. Mom would trade for a diesel, except hers is paid for and she doesn't really want a car payment yet.
The fact that I can do an easy 400+ miles on the highway between fill ups really helps on longer trips. All stock Rubicon diesel, so far. There are several places that we go that or 350 to 400 miles one way. It's nice not having to stop until we're there.
Not worried about the potential extra cost of fuel or DEF or oil changes, it nothing new for us. Traded a Chevy 3500 diesel for the Wrangler and a Ram 2500 diesel for the chevy. Been there, done that, no biggie.
I could also mention that I tow from time to time. Currently we have a 7x12 plus height enclose trailer, it's designed to haul my SxS, 4k plus or minus loaded. The diesel pulls it like a dream
I could also claim I've been around the EcoDiesel for awhile, my Father-in-law had a 2015 Ram 1500 and I've used it a few times to pull with when my truck was incapacitated. Like the time we were all loaded up and just as we hit the highway got 2 flats.
In the end, it mostly comes down to the fact I wanted the diesel. I wanted the better for me power. I wanted the better range not the actual mileage, although it's nice to tell people I get 25ish commuting to work, or that we got almost 28.8mpg going north to south over grapevine on I5 in California, passing others while making the climb up. Yep, I just wanted the diesel, cause WHY NOT!!!
