Why does my BSM not available light come on?

sometimes when traveling at a low rate of speed on a dirt or gravel road, my BSM indicator comes on and says not available. the little light on the mirror comes on along with the dash. the light on the mirror stays lit until I turn my truck off. once I refire the engine the light disappears.

it's just weird it doesn't happen except at low speeds.

Is the trucks exterior dirty or dust covered? I know that’s an asinine question saying that you live on a dirt road but an excessive amount of dirt on the rear corner of the vehicle can cause this type of issue the same as the front radar box for the ACC (adaptive cruise control). Dirt is the worst enemy of these systems.

May need to open up your tail light and make sure the sensor bracket thing hasn’t shifted on you. It does happen. Mine would go off periodically until I changed my tail lights out. I did notice the sensor wasn’t tightened all the way when in the OEM housing. The connection was good but the sensor bracket itself was slightly loose.

wouldn't call it excessive but yes, we do travel gravel roads from time to time. dust can get powder dry if it hasn't rained which hasn't been a problem these past few weeks

Dust on the sensors. Wipe them off and it will go away. Just to come back on again when it covered in dust. Crazy issue for an off road vehicle…

I was just down in the Shenandoah Mtns/GWNF and in the tight trails (trees, rhododendren, etc.), the BSM Not Available message comes on. Fortunately, I am not changing lanes or anything back there. I think I've only noticed that happening on a dusty road (moon dust) once while out west. Its always good once I power cycle!

I've had them stop working in extremely heavy downpours like when the wipers on high speed don't help at all. When the rain lightened up they were back working. Fortunately that doesn't happen here often.

I was driving down the highway and a meat truck (big refrigerated box truck) passed me slowly and my bsm quit working, once he was passed it came back. Then a few miles down the road while we were coming into a town I slowly was passing him and the bsm again went off until I was passed him. Weird, but something in that truck was interfering with the bsm. Maybe it was a nuclear missile or something they were carrying , who knows.
I've never noticed it happening when near any other vehicle.
