Uh oh .... we got another check engine light. Sorry ... back to regular programming
My engine was off - is it not common to have that until you start the vehicle? Has done that since I bought it, as well as in most vehicles I've owned

So if I am stuck and want to be outside when I am winching myself out I have to either put the transfer case in neutral or the trans in neutral with my seatbelt buckled up?
Yes, that is correct. It is the result of a celebrity who got out of his Jeep several years ago, didn't put it in park, and got run over and died.

Nope .. you are correct. My assumption is that it was running. I retract.

From my experience, its best to winch with your butt in the driver’s seat. That way you can best operate the steering wheel, assist with throttle, etc. if you’re winching another object, use either the brakes or an anchor strap to hold the vehicle, never the parking pall.

You can also put the transfer case in 4lo and the trans in neutral, this will deactivate Auto Park

But then you're stuck with a gasser
This is an unfortunate truth. We have a little Mahindra Roxor (mechanically it's essentially a WWII era CJ) with a 2.0l turbo diesel and man is that thing a blast to row gears in the mountains around here.

I think I want a diesel+manual Gladiator more than I want the Hemi, if I'm honest.

How did you get that plated? Or do you mean just on trails?

Auto, trans in neutral, truck running.

Maybe I didn’t have my door closed all the way or something?
There's a safety mechanism on Jeeps.

Transmission in anything other than park
Drivers door opens
Driver's seatbelt off

If all of the above boxes are checked the transmission will slam itself into Park to prevent the vehicle rolling away or over the driver after they exit. This was put in place after the death of actor Anton Yelchin; he got out of his Jeep thinking the knob (Grand Cherokee) was in Park, but it only went to Neutral. The Jeep rolled forward as he was opening a gate, pinning him and killing him.

When you got out of the vehicle, it put itself into Park. The gear selector is not physically connected to the transmission, it's just a glorified electrical switch. You can see this happen with a message on the dash and the transmission selector will be in "D" but will be dark, indicating it's not in drive - the "P" will blink at your showing the discrepancy between the selection and what the transmission is doing.

The Tazer Mini has the ability to disable AutoPark - instead, the dash will display "AUTO PARK DISABLED" when it would otherwise engage.

In some states (like Utah) you can plate it as a side-by-side as long as it has all the required DOT lighting installed and working.

I dug and found there were other cases of vehicles doing this........ one, I know of first hand, the guy was moving a car, "put it in park" and got out - the vehicle rolled back onto a highway and totaled 2 vehicles.

That's the one that made the news, but it wasn't the only case.
