DIY Bed Rack and Rails

I wanted to post this as it was inspired by @WhatExit? build of this Gladiator Rack. He has been a wealth of Knowledge and you should read his post

Although I have not tested with a Tonneau cover yet I will shortly I have a couple more things to add for customization but I wanted to add a shopping list for the everyday joe that wants something on a budget. And of course, you get to add your little piece of you made it yourself.

Here is the shopping list. You don't need all of this if you have a Trail Rail system already But I figured for under $350 I have a 4 post Rack and a rail system.

Now as I have some side pieces fabricated still working out that design. I wanna do it homemade so. If anybody has some insight on inexpensive say 1/8" slotted steel let me know. It can be bare.

Went the same rout. turned out pretty good. looking forward to seeing what you do with the sides.

No pun intended, but do those rack at all side to side?

you mean rock side to side? I have had no real weight on mine yet.

Oh so a tonneau does fit is that factory or a tiger?

So I am no engineer but here is the rough concept. Now I just need to find an engineer to put it into a CNC language so I can get a quote from a fabrication guy.

its the tiger for the Colorado. fits perfect without the rails. it fits with the rails but weather stripping is going to have to be put underneath to make a seal again.

I'm not sure it would be cool if he could. I just don't have anywhere near that experience or tools to do right. I was literally thinking of taking some Tin sheets and Mocking it up and flattening back out and talking to a machine shop to have made. scratch cardboard mock up first

Question the Tonneau cover you put the rails over the rack brackets? and Im assuming your using the Hook clamps that come with the cover?

This looks great. Where did you get the brackets to attach to the unistrut? You attached the no weld towers to them, right? I was considering bed rail clamps (if I can find them) and L-Brackets before I saw this.

I used the unistrut T nuts to connect the no weld bracket to the unistrut the same bolts I used to mount the towers to the rail system.

I don't think I asked the right question or asked the question right. There is some sort of bracket attached to the rack towers. Is that the backing plate? It's taking the place of the Max Modulus brackets in the OP example right?

Ah ok, you meant the part that is in between the tower and the bed rails the yellow circle? That is a bracket that Scott from compactcampingstore.com designed just for the bedrails. It's not on the website but if you email Scott at [email protected] he will ask you if you want standard or utility grade. 4 towers or 6 towers.
