I just couldn't resist. And don't get me wrong, I love my truck, and the JT concept, but no where does Stellantis, FCA or Jeep state that the JT is a true half ton or even a 1/2 ton truck. Capacity minus 5 passengers (lets just say at 160 lbs) doesn't leave a lot of cargo weight available for the bed.
I have seen some Overlanding rigs that are way to heavy, and for no good reason.

FCA doesn't state the gladiator as a half ton because it's not... a RAM 1500 is a half ton.

A Gladiator is a small truck, it doesn't compete with F150s, ram 1500s or silverado 1500s on anything but price.

How is 1000 pounds not 1/2 ton? My Rubicon has a load rating for just over that.

because the monikers are long since outdated and yet still used. while the gladiator has a payload cap up to 1700lbs (85% of a ton) it's not a half ton truck. it's especially not a 3/4 ton truck which is where super duties start (f250, ram/chevy/gmc 2500s).

1/2 ton truck hasn't meant an actual half ton in a long, long time. half ton just means full size truck now, which the gladiator is not. 3/4 ton means entry level super duty, 1 ton refers to your 350/3500s

Why? Because it's america and our measurements don't have to make sense. How many Hogsheads in an Olympic sized swimming pool again?

Semantics on Jeep's part then if they choose to not market it as a 1/2 ton as the actual load ratings suggest it is.

Mid 1980's Toyota pickup marketed and offered a full 1 ton payload model on that small platform.

I think American buyers just have gotten use to equating 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton and 1 ton to body size and frame size rather than actual specs a vehicle can safely run.

What’s the cargo capacity of a ram 1500, Silverado 1500, f150?

Edit: I looked up the ‘21 ram 1500 and it’s low cargo capacity range is 1200ish. That’s higher than the JT, as is logical and expected. I’d still calll the JT a mid sized 1/2 ton, implying less capacity than a full sized.

What I do find interesting is that in Pennsylvania, you get a 'Truck' plate and have to have a special '2' sticker on the windshield.

Funny thing was that yesterday, I saw a Honda Ridgeline AWD with truck plates and that '2' sticker on the windshield. That thing is probably as far from a 'truck' as one can get ???

Welcome to the wonderful wacky world of US truck rating. A truck rating is basically what the operator, or manufacturer, says it is. Often this is based on usage. For example, go to Ryder and rent a truck without a CDL and you will most likely get a vehicle with a decal on the side that states capaciTy less than 10,000 pounds. Not that is the limit of the truck, but that is the most you can drive on your automobile license.

The gladiator is indeed a truck with a 1/2 ton rating as it can carry a 1700 pound payload. But it does not fit the marketing image of a “Half Ton Pickup Truck” created for the ad agencies for the big three.

It is a “mid sized” truck as far as todays terms go for categories of trucks. Half tons are the 150s and 1500s in todays terms. 3/4 ton are 2500, etc. Most literature states that everywhere.

Jeep says it is a mid size truck on this page. Putting us with the Tacomas, Colorados etc and NOT 150s on up.

https://www.jeep.com/2021/competitive-compare/gladiator.html

Long long ago the names were based on how much they could carry in payload and technically it would have been a half ton, but those terms are outdated as vehicles evolved with greater payloads and therefore are useless as using for the category of the truck. IMHO.

Might want to get off you high horse there, it may be unibody but it has a longer bed than we do. I believe deeper as well
