So the wife wants to take a 9 hour trip. No problem except we normally had our dog Stella (75lbs Weimaraner) ride in her kennel when we owned a Tundra.

Tried sliding her kennel in this afternoon and that ain't happening! That goofy back door design prohibits that. Even with the front seat scooted all the way up it won't fit. I didn't try taking the door off, but that's not an option I really want to use. I am not crazy about having her ride at those speeds laying in the back seat.

Anyone else have a dog kennel inside their back seat for a larger dog?

Yes that's her in my avatar. Her vet calls her Ms Sexy.

Why does it need to be a kennel? Get a seatbelt harness like joyride (absolutely no relation to my username!) and buckle pooch in. Once on the highway they always chill out and fall asleep.

I did a cross country move with a GSD mix and 2 cats in an Audi A4, the dog slept the entire drive, other than when the car would slow down he knew to take a peek.

3 solid buckle down spots for the seatbelt.

Any chance you can go through the front by reclining both seats?

I second @j.o.y.ride 's suggestion on harness. I have done that for my border collie for years. I made a platform for the Ram 2500 so she could ride between the boys on camping trips. For the Gladiator, I am planning to use a harness and something like this hammock from Amazon.

I have two border collies sound asleep between Vegas and Texas in multiple rigs I’ve owned with just a simple seatbelt harness. Never an issue.

we talked about a harness but i've always crated my dog on trips. just kind of personal preference I guess. i am not the slowest driver on the interstate.

I think the crate gives the dog more protection in a crash vs a harness but this may be the new way we have to adjust to travel with her. guess I was spoiled in having a huge back seat in the tundra for so many years. we do have the hammock/seat protector already in place.

i think i am still going to try to at least remove the back door harness and door stop and see if I can squeeze her kennel in that way. if that works I might just go ahead and remove the back seat and build her a platform where I can attach her kennel to that.

still learning about the gladiator.

Same boat, that backdoor design is a killer. Not to mention so soft that one of my dogs hit her knee on that side jumping in and dented it. Another jeep guy came over with a soft topper last week and I believe he had 2 kennels back there. I am considering.

I've wondered if one will fit if you take the top off and put it in from above.

Don't compromise. A kennel is simply the best and safest way to drive with a dog. The dog derives comfort from the kennel that can be moved from car to car, but its still his home. The car stays clean and the interior doesn't get beat up.

What size kennel do you have? I bought an Intermediate when I had my GSP. It was a bit tighter than his normal kennels but he just lies down so its fine. He couldn't stand up in it but again, he didn't care. he was going with his family.

The GSP passed at the ripe old age of 14. Now we have a GSP Lab mix. He's a lot smaller than the GSP and fits easily. (GSP was 75 lbs the new guy is 55 lbs)

My Intermediate sized Ruffland fits in the back. I prefer to fold the rear seat down and put the kennel on the back of the seat. It keeps the kennel offf the leather.

I did this before I got a topper. Now I have an RSI Smartcap and he rides in back. In fact the ability carry a dog or dogs in back was the primary reason I got the Gladiator rather than a Wrangler.

Ironically, I can put 2 Ruffland intermediate or even large crates in the back of my Wife's Volvo wagon, (lengthwise) but can't put them in a wrangler or Bronco.

My suggestion to you is to give the Intermediate a try. Most dogs curl up into a ball in the kennel anyway and its really not a problem for a couple of hours. All of my dogs, once they learned that getting in the kennel meant a trip with the family, or even better, a hunting trip, loved their kennel.

Waiting for me to open the door.

When he sees the pack and the e-collar I literally can't get him out.

If he sees us packing for a trip, he worries he won't be included. So he gets in his seat early. Ha.

One other thing re back door.

The door has a strut that controls the door when you open it. You have to remove the screws where it attaches tot the body to remove the door. Since I take the doors off all the time, those struts are permanently removed.

Now those Cordura straps control how far the door opens. Which allows the door to open much farther.

Maybe you can try removing one of those struts and seeing if it allows the door to open more. It retracts into the door so its very easy to manage once its disconnected.

Though I'd still check out the Intermediate sized Ruffland.

I know I'm getting a little off track, but I love dog threads.

Before the Gladiator, my GSP traveled in a kennel in the back of my wife's car most of the time. But that didn't stop him from trying in my Volvo sedan. Ha.

By the way, the Ruffland Intermediate fit in the back seat of my Volvo just fine. I hunted that way for 10+ years.

Did you try to take off just the limiting strap and the mechanism?
Then the doors open all the way, just care that you don't let it hit the fron t door handle too hard (wind and such)

dented it
I am in the same boat. 3 dents left side 2 on the right side just above the rock sliders.

Most are from our dog slapping his back foot a little against the bottom part when he jumps in. One I know is from the dog ramp I set against it. Did not think the Jeep would be so sensitive
