This took me a second to read. What you're saying is that after 10k you were down 1 quart? When did you have your first oil change?

It's not uncommon for a diesel engine to burn some oil. One quart in 10k miles is within the range considered to be acceptable.

This isn’t at you….. but the article.

we have owned an abnormal amount of diesels…. Literally 5 are in the driveway right now…. And that’s just what we have in the driveway.

they all consume oil for a short period of time when breaking in.

How in the world is amsoil claiming their oil minimizes consumption…. ?. I’m calling BS and I like amsoil… CK4 oils haven’t been on the shelf in what 5? 10? Years?? Seems like a pretty crappy use of data to make a now pretty much irrelevant claim…

I can tell you from personal experience that Mobil 1 puked out of my front/rear crank seals and puffed out the tail pipe on every shift or deceleration when run in my newer Suzuki Samurai engine, but switched back to Delo 15w40 and the leaks and smoking stopped? I later tried Amsoil ASL 5w30 and it did not leak or burn at all so I used it till I sold that vehicle?

How could one explain that?

Honestly, I wouldn’t consider that to be too much, especially for a brand new motor. I would be more worried about fuel in the oil than loss of oil.

Did you change your oil at both 5,000 and 10,000 miles?

You need to pull a 5,000 lb trailer around for 500 miles. This will help set the rings and oil blow-by will subside. The Gen3 ecodiesel uses low-tension piston rings. Good for less friction, bad for blow-by.
