If there was a widget under the hood I could unplug that would prevent starting... that would be useful information to me. Maybe not for every day (and thus probably wouldn't have helped our poor OP) but definitely for when I go on a trip and it's just sitting there for days

I used to take the main engine relay with me when I left my Tacoma at a trailhead for days or weeks... Haven't yet tried something like that on the 3.0D

In the early hours of Jan 3, my much-loved 2022 JT Rubicon Diesel was stolen from my driveway here in Ottawa. It was locked and alarmed (factory) and all that, but the perps very likely had cloned my key fob. I had no idea that this was a thing that, now having read all about it, is extremely common. In fact, a neighbour two streets over had their new Wrangler Unlimited stolen on the very same night.

IMG_2879.jpeg

This was my best build yet, and because I had done it completely on my own, without any pro help, it was very personal. It was my fifth rig and I was getting it ready for a big overland trip this summer. I was very proud of it--Jeepers know how it feels when you put so much of your 'self' into your build.

The insurance adjuster is coming to my place today to go over my documentation and discuss the reimbursement they will offer. It'll be the lesser of:
  • Actual purchase price
  • Manufacturer's list price w/equipment at time of purchase
  • Price of a new similarly equipped replacement vehicle
Sadly it'll end up being the second one--prices were already above list when I got it back in February of 2022. And now, costs are way up, and interest rates are way higher. But that's not the worst of it; it is highly unlikely the thousands I put into it in mods will be covered.

So, here comes the cautionary part of the tale. Do this now if you have a keyless entry/push button start system on your Jeep and you want to KEEP your vehicle.
  1. Disable the keyless entry/proximity feature (in the vehicle settings on the infotainment system)
  2. Keep your key fobs in a Faraday box at home, away from doors and windows, and a Faraday pouch while in the vehicle or on your person walking about
  3. Get a kill-switch - if you go with a DIY or inexpensive one, you must hide that switch well; if you want peace of mind, get a Ghost II system (expensive, but I'll be doing it for my next one)
  4. Get a Club or other physical deterrent, like a brake pedal-to-steering wheel bar
The detective assigned to my case told me about 100 vehicles are stolen every single day in Ottawa; in a call he had had with the Insurance Bureau of Canada (or whatever they're called), they said in 2021 alone there were CAD $700M in vehicle thefts. These thieves are organized, and it's big business. They can get those key fob scanners on Amazon. Jeeps and other vehicles go straight to the Port of Montreal and end up overseas.

Don't be complacent like I was. Whatever the cost and inconvenience it may represent, it pales in comparison the pain of losing something you put your heart and soul into.

Chris
Why aren’t the Mounties staking out the port for all these stolen Jeeps, if they all know that’s where they are getting smuggled out of the country from? Holy shit the amount of Jeeps stolen in Canada is insane. Thieves don’t deserve to breathe. Does Stellantis have a GPS Ttracking feature?

sorry to hear this im out in Toronto area and the theft rates is high AF

ive said it before, place 2 Air Tags in your vehicles (hidden) and remove the speakers....there is no way a crook is going to find it with the speakers removed

have a few friends on speed dial and get it when its pinged...also if you have a camera set it to notify you when it detects a person near your vehicle at night. Hopefully your INS company helps you out with the mods.
Why remove the speakers? You saying speakers in the AirTags?

yes each tag has a speaker....

if a crook has an iphone it will alert them there is an air tag following them.....once their iphone notices the air tag there is an option to play a sound on the tag which then allows them to find the tag (safety feature for all your pervs trying to hide one in that 18 y/old your trying to pickup)

remove the speaker, hide it well and if ever your car is stolen you can track the tag.

from what i understand if you are not the owner of the tag you simply cant disable it (i might be wrong but the only way to get rid of the tag is to remove it from the vehicle)

get two hide them where nobody can find them but you and have a few friends on speed dial if your car gets stolen

The solution for thieves is simple... all you need is a tree stump about 2 1/2 feet tall, a leather noose with a 3 foot lead, and a Circus Mallet. Balls stretched out on the stump while secured by the noose and a single swing of the Mallet and that a-hole will never steal again. Nor will any other thieves who witness it.

Hidden Airtags are easily disabled.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canad...rack-your-car-and-steal-it-from-your-driveway
"
However, if the device is placed on the exterior of the car, or in the trunk, for example, it would be difficult to hear its sound, nor would you, inside your house for the night, hear it from the driveway.

The most likely scenario would be that you would get an “AirTag Found Moving With You” or “AirTag Detected” message on your iPhone or iPad.

In this case, Apple says the AirTag can be disabled by tapping that message, then following the onscreen steps.

I have an app on my Android that finds them........... the kicker is that once a thief has the vehicle, the tags rely on it being around iphones to be found. They'll be taking it away from any iphones so good luck. They aren't long distance devices.
They are worthless in rural areas, on interstates and so on.

They are easily found by Android, too, since they are BT. Thieves aren't going to stay in populated areas in plain sight or near people with iPhones.

Yep. Apple devices can actually disable them tho. Thief never has to find it. Just detect and disable.

Anti stalking is > than anti theft I guess.

Like a NO momentary button in plain sight that opens the can bus wire from the starter button. Requires holding it to start. I'm might try this out and see if the remote start function still works.
That would be a cool use of our dead pedal momentary switch! Push-to-start!

Switch or no, that's a good looking dead pedal and I like the crazy amount of adjustability you have there. I have a dead pedal already, but that one is tempting anyway.

Not everyone has that. And a previous theft had no luck with guardian finding his vehicle. I didn't receive any savings on my auto insurance but having that service.
My buddy in Ottawa had his stolen a month or so ago from his driveway. He also has Guardian and they were zero help. Either the thieves are pulling the fuse that controls the communications hub (Guardian relies on a cell signal) or they are using signal jammers - or both.

Thanks! It is one of the parts I like most that I have designed. I have them in both my JT and my Wife's JLU. Mine is using the "old school" floor dimmer. I have them connected to a set of Baja Designs LP6s and it is the ultimate "high beam" lights for back road driving.
