Changed the oil about 400 miles ago. Smelt oil when driving this weekend. Pulled over and she's puking oil right where the transmisson and motor meet up. First thought it was the rear main seal, but figured out that wasn't it.

Dumped that oil and did a new oil change on the side of the road and put in 5 new quarts. Made it home and didn't seem like a problem. Next day she started all over. Changed out the filter with new one and new gasket. Torqued to 18 ft lbs. Drove it this morning and I am seeing oil on the top side.

Called dealer and of course they are backed up for several weeks. They called back and said they would work me on Thursday this week if I would leave it. The good news is that Jeep is now installing the aluminum part and got rid of the plastic.

I've been changing oil for almost 45 years on every vehicle I've ever owned. I didn't overtighten it. This is my second oil change on this vehicle. I even purchased a new torque wrench that would go that low just to make sure.

Service guy said that it sounded like I knew what I was doing and it would be a warranty issue. Said he saw another 21 just a few weeks ago.

Hmm, they had that issue on the JK's. You would figure they fixed the Oil filter housing by now.

My '23 has the plastic housing.......wonder if I should proactively swap it with the new design?

I just did my second oil change yesterday. First oil change at 1800 miles and this one at 6000 miles. There was a few small pieces of metal in the filter; normal for a new motor with under 10,000 miles.

Does your invoice happen to have the part number for the upgraded version?

Thanks in advance

Yes sir, the service guy and I were talking about it and I really wanted to go aluminum if it was going to have to be replaced. He said no worry, they had some instock and it would be aluminum.

No i do not have a part number yet. Won't get dropped off till later this week.

I had this done with my 2019 Grand Cherokee Ltd. about a month ago.

Because I'm now out of warranty (time not mileage), I had my trusted local mechanic do it. Time from discovery to fixing was less than a week. Mine had been leaking a while but not so catastrophic as to require serious additions of oil to compensate. I had noticed it like a month or two before my last oil change but really didn't think anything of it, just likened it to acting like a Harley leaving it's mark on the driveway  The last oil change was when my mechanic told me about it. It's very common with the 3.6L Pentastar V-6, and he's done quite a few Wranglers and Grand Cherokees with that engine.

All told, it was $1,087 to do it. The part was $289 and the rest was labor.

I'm hoping and praying I don't get this issue with my Gladiator (6/19 build date) also out of warranty by time and not mileage.

I'll remember that, should it go in my Gladiator, there is an aluminum replacement available vs. the plastic one.

People Work?
You'll have to weigh the cost of diy or third party vs waiting for the dealer.
Honestly I think I'd go diy, but I don't have a job and I've got a nice garage.

Just changed mine on my JK a couple weeks ago. Stock plastic let go at 100k miles and I’d done all of the oil changes since 13k miles. Its not too bad of a job, took me around 6 hours being super careful. Total PITA though considering you have to take the upper and lower intake off.

I did replace it with the all aluminum part

I would love to retire by 55 and by then will have 37 years at work but the darn FERS retirement system wont let me retire before 62 without big penalties despite my military time. :-/

That's the reason I started doing my own oil changes. Last dealer oil change the filter cap was over tightened. I may have to think about replacing mine.

I plan to change my oil filler part to aluminum when I replace the sparkplugs. The plugs are buried under the same parts.

if i was doing it myself, it would be advisable.
