I got the same email but with a different image this morning:

Interesting that both it and the one from the original post are soft tops.
I noticed that too.

Something occurred to me this morning. How did auto makers convince people that putting a V8 in a vehicle is some kind of extreme upgrade. Did I miss the memo on this? Since when?

Yes of course a V8 is usually an upgrade over a V6 in terms of performance, that's obvious. But vehicles have been coming with V8s since the birth of the automobile. Mainstream late model vehicles including Jeeps, 4Runners, and every full size pickup have had V8s. V8s are common. There isn't some V8 tax making them more expensive. They didn't have to do any engineering. The current Dodge Hemi has been around forever. Go to Ram dealership. V8s abound.

It's like through slight of hand, social media influencers, hype, smoke, bs Jeep has convinced people that the option for a small block V8 with hemispherical head (something most V8s have) is worth $38k over the JL Rubicon with a V6! That's more than what AEV was charging to put crate engines in Jeeps!

Oh, is it because there's a neat switch on the dash to boost the exhaust sound? Oh that's certainly worth about $10k. Yeah no one's had a sport exhaust button until Jeep. There's something Orwellian about convincing people to except that something that was once either standard practice or a slight upgrade is worth the price of an entire second (nice) car. I mean you could buy a Rubicon JL and a Miata Club Sport for the price of a 392. You could buy a Rubicon JL and a well equiped family car. You’re 2/3 of the way to buying a turn key Miata Cup race car or a Porsche Boxster for that delta. What's the Gladiator 392 gonna cost? $120k? You could put a crate engine in it for that price and build it into an off road monster second to nothing on the trails.
Don’t forget CJ5 and CJ7 V8s. Also, V8 was an option on the original Gladiator. They can put one in this truck all they want but I won’t be paying what they will be asking for it.

The first picture almost looks like it has half doors with the soft uppers. But I could be imagining things!
I believe that’s what it is too. Just not sure if there’s any significance to it. lol

Hopefully the announcement isn’t that they’re all of the sudden allowing half door orders on HVY or Punkn.

That's my point. Plus the Grand Cherokee for years had a V8 and the Dodge Dakota.

Yes!!! That rolls down like the Tundra would be awesome! Makes it very open air with rolling all windows down. Also would make the hard top lighter to remove.

I’m hoping if they put a rear locking diff standard on the Willys like they did the Wrangler, that they add something to the Mojave to justify the extra money. It’d be nice if they added the front locking diff.

My understanding was the semi-float (or is it a full floater) axle on the JL was to bring up the towing capacity. The JT doesn’t have this limitation. It’s towing limitation is cooling. I suspect the JT won’t get the new axle but who knows.

I’m thinking grill and Uconnect, power seats and whatever other little bits the JL got and that’s about it. Maybe the 4xe, but unless it has a bigger battery it’s not going to be very compelling. Maybe the V8, but the price will probably be shocking. Hell the 4xe price will probably be shocking (no pun intended).

Competitors (Tacoma TRD pro, Ranger Raptor, Colorado ZR2) now have 400+ torque in MY2024. If MY24 Gladiator doesn't offer any comparable powertrain option, Jeep will lose the market. It would be a big mistake. Wish Gladiator comes with V8 option but we all know it's not gonna happen. At least I want 4xE. I don't care about fuel mileage, just need some power.

I like the V6 personally. Especially since it’s $25,000 less. lol

If some would pay 4K for the diesel, i would pay 4-5K for the 5.7. The 392 jeep itself is out of most peoples checkbook ranges but a 4-5K$ 5.7 or even 3.0 Twin Turbo, I would spend it swiftly. They won't though, not in 2024. Who knows how they will offer the 2.0/hybrid motor in 24 for the Jt's, but they will. (Engine option or specific l Jeep model)

Yeah, I paid $4K for the diesel. I didn’t think I’d break even in fuel saving or anything. I just preferred that powertrain. I don’t think 5K for the V8 is too unreasonable in todays dollars. When I look at more fair comparison than my initial post, and price out an JLRX with the 315 tires, the V8 is still $20k more. That’s crazy. It’s novelty pricing. It should have a Demon engine for that. Feels a bit like a slap in the face to diehard Jeep people. Like they’re saying “this isn’t for you. This is for influencers and YouTube.”

Yeah, no way Jeep offers the 5.7 for $5K. Even if that’s reasonable, they wouldn’t do it. I’d say at least a $20K upgrade from the factory.
