When I shift from 2H to 4L (while coasting about 2-3mph) I get the following messages-
  • AutoPark Disabled
  • Electronic Stability Control Off
  • Indicator lights are on for Forward Collision OFF and ESC OFF
After a short distance driving in 4L the following messages appear-
  • Traction Control On
  • Service 4WD System
  • Warning lights above fuel indicator cycle between Service Forward Collision light, Service Adaptive Cruise Control warning light, and SERV 4WD light.
  • ESC OFF indicator light is out.
System appears to operate as it is supposed to in 4L.

Shifting back from 4L to 2H (while coasting about 2-3 mph), both the 4L and 2H lights on the right side of the tachometer remain on. Other warning lights cited above remain on. Vehicle remains in 4L until I shut off the engine, wait a few seconds, then restart the vehicle. At that point, only the indicator light for 2H is on and vehicle operates normally.

You can shift from 2HI to 4HI while in gear and traveling slow.

You can then shift to 4LO from 4HI while going slow and shifting transmission into Neutral.

Yes, I am going from 2H to 4L, so, yes, it goes through 4Auto, 4H, and N to get there. I have no problems using 4Auto or 4H.

Are you placing the automatic transmission in neutral (or pressing the clutch if manual) before shifting the transfer case?

Manual:

4H To 4L Or 4L To 4H
With the vehicle rolling at 1 to 3 mph (2 to
5 km/h), shift an automatic transmission into
NEUTRAL (N), or press the clutch pedal on a
manual transmission. While the vehicle is
coasting at 1 to 3 mph (2 to 5 km/h), shift the
transfer case lever firmly to the desired
position. Do not pause with the transfer case in
N (Neutral). Once the shift is completed, place
the automatic transmission into DRIVE or
release the clutch pedal on a manual
transmission.
NOTE:
Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the
vehicle completely stopped; however, difficulty
may occur due to the mating teeth not being
properly aligned. Several attempts may be
required for clutch teeth alignment and shift
completion to occur. The preferred method is
with the vehicle rolling at 1 to 3 mph (2 to
5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage
4L with the vehicle moving faster than 1 to
3 mph (2 to 5 km/h).

The vehicle cannot remain in 4L then suddenly be in 2H via cycling the ignition off and on because the transfer case is mechanically shifted. If the shifter is in 2H then the transfer case is in 2H, regardless of what the dash indication may say.

That aside, if it's still under warranty then take it in and have it looked at. If it isn't under warranty, see if you can find out what fault codes are being thrown. On the surface, it sounds to me like the vehicle isn't sure what mode and range the transfer case is in, possibly due to an issue with the t-case position sensor signal.

Keep reminding me because I keep forgetting - neutral - transmission, not t-case, neutral, then 4L

Coasting in Neutral.
Just to clarify, there are 2 neutrals. One for the auto trans and one for the T-case. Transmission must be in neutral to shift the t-csse from 4H to 4L. Or clutch depressed on a manual.
When I shift from 2H to 4L (while coasting about 2-3mph) I get the following messages-
  • AutoPark Disabled
  • Electronic Stability Control Off
  • Indicator lights are on for Forward Collision OFF and ESC OFF
These warnings are what I would say are Normal when moving to 4L although I don't have forward collision on mine. I do however get the other notifications.

The service lights sound suspect though. Those shouldn't be there under normal circumstances.

Transmission (automatic) is in neutral.
As @Lunentucker stated, you need to put the transmission in neutral. If you're going to go back to 2H from 4L, put the transmission in neutral, shift the T-Case to 4H, and then you can go to 4H. The transmission being in Neutral is the key.

On one or 2 occasions after shifting from 4h to 2h I have had the 4 wheel drive stay in . But only while it was under a little stress with a quick stop shift to neutral or a short back up it comes right out.
I have the auto. Anytime I go to 4lo the auto trans. Goes to neutral both directions for in and out of 4lo.
Iuneticker is correct . Neutral is the key.

I always go to neutral. Dealer had it today, they traced the fault to the transfer case actuator. It's on order, I go back later in the month. While it is under warranty, I'll have to pay labor for the time it takes to remove/reinstall skid plates.

I'll be curious to know the part number shown on the invoice for what they changed when it's fixed.
