Bed Holes? Do these holes have a purpose?

My bed, maybe everyone else's beds, have two holes each side in the forward upper panel. I just wanted to know if they have some purpose, for example, for an option I don't have. I'll probably plug mine anyway.

Yup - there will be nutserts in one hole on each side if you get the factory roll-up tonneau cover. One hole is for alignment, then the other holds a bolt. One bolt per side.

Pre-mid-2020 manufacture date the upper holes had nutserts from the factory. After that date, they weren't routinely installed (apparently, per @ShadowsPapa, just if you ordered an OEM tonneau cover.)
Caught the aftermarket guys by surprise!

Yea I bought the rollup mopar cover from another member here. Was really annoyed when I excitedly went to install, to find that my 2021 didn't have the rivnuts in that top hole...few days later and I own maybe 50+ extra rivnuts in different sizes and the tool to install them!

If you are doing a bedliner do yourself a favor and don't spray over the holes. You never know when you may change your mind and want to add a roof rack or some other accessory.

I would have thought Jeep would have put rubber plugs in those holes, but I guess they were trying to save a few pennies. So I guess I'll have to find my own rubber plugs.

It’s a weight reduction process from the factory. It reduces your total weight by 2 oz! ?

Why plug 'em? Nothing's going to get up in there.
A lot of trucks out there, not just Jeep, have open holes in various spots in the bed. They have little reason to hermetically seal a truck bed with so many people doing so many things to them later - bedliners, bedrugs, toppers, racks, whatever.

I did work to seal mine a little bit, but it's mostly because of snow dust and dust from rock roads getting in back there - and I sleep back there at some swap meets and car shows.

We now have an Alu-Cab Canopy (Alu-Cab's term for their bed cap), but I have strict instructions to make sure everything under the cap stays dry and dust free. Gotta plug them holes.
