Is 12.5 too wide for the stock 7.5 wide wheels? I am looking to run 35s.
What are others experience with 12.5 wide wheels on stock sport wheels?
Thank you in advance-

Good luck finding a tire store that will mount that on 7.5" wheels.. Check the tire mfg on the rim width.

I'm running 37x12.5's on the stock launch edition 7.5" rim. No problem at all.

People Work?
Not that familiar with the stock offset on the Sport trim, but they're fine on the 7.5" wide rims on the Mojave.
MOST tire dealers will mount and balance them with no issues.

Been running 315/70r17s for 14k on stock 7.5” rims. No issues.

discount tire will mount them no problem, their compatibility chart says 12.5” wide is fine for 7.5” rims.

ignore the people that don't know the rules and say its not doable.

Courtesy of @Discount Tire they have backed me multiple times on this subject. MT Baja Boss A/Ts 37x12.5r17 on a Sport OE 7.5 wide wheel. Plenty of people run this setup, we call it poor man's beadlocks. You can easily get this down to 3 psi and be pretty rough with it, it will still hold the bead. and its also super easy to reseat if you ever happen to manage and blow it. helpful tip, any time you unseat a tire and fix it trailside, it needs to be taken back in for rebalance cus odds are you didn't get it back exactly on the dot. Another reason to go to discount, they will rotate and balance fast af, and are usually super cheap about it or in my case it's always been free. They have even remounted a tire on a new wheel for me free of charge after i bent the previous one and had to replace it.

edit: 35s might no be tall enough for true 12.5s but you might be able to squeeze metric 35s. I recommend 10.50 to 11 inches for what you want. it'll still fill the wheel well but it lighter, more efficient and has better grip in general for our application.

Why risk it? I ran 35 in Nitto Trail Grapplers 11.5 inch wide on stock wheels and aired way down and they did great. Moved to beadlock wheels and now run 12.5 in

I’m curious about 12.5 because that’s the easiest to find and they seem cheaper. I’m not finding more narrow tires and when I do they seem to be more expensive

Works just fine. I have been running 35's with 12.5 width since 700 miles on my JL. It has 93,000 on it now. I'm on my 2nd set...1st was a set of KO2's and now I am running General Grabber X3's. They wear just fine...more in the middle, but I'm getting very long life.

On my JT I am running 35" Kenda Clever AT3's. They feel and drive beautifully.

Old off-roaders called narrow rims "poor man's bead locks". The old timers say it is harder to unseat from the rim when running at low pressure than a wider rim. I don't know if that is true, but I've never had a bead slip off its track when wheeling. I don't go below 15psi, though.

I also like that the sidewall bulges out more, protecting the rim from scuffs and scrapes. I've had 3 trips to Moab and many other off-road trips on them and the rims rarely get a scratch.

Hope that helps!

Risk what?

That Nitto is a nice tire, btw. I may move to a narrow tire later, for traction reasons. I've run pizza cutters before and they were really good in mud.

I did the 37x12.5 on the stock Rubi rims for 6,000 miles. Wasn't happy with the results. Had to run air pressure down to 24 in the front and 22 in the rear just trying to keep the center of the tread from wearing out. At those air pressures on the street. The JT wiggled on the highway. Slow steering response from the tires taking their time to react to steering inputs. Put 8.5" wide rims on. The difference was night and day. Plus I'm running 28 in the front and 26 in the rear. No more wiggling.

So far, I'm loving them, but mine are the 12.5" wide variety. They are my favorite AT tire I've owned, so far. TIme will tell, but they knocked it out of the park on my JK on a trip to Moab and I'm loving every aspect of their performance and behavior so far on the JT. One of their attributes is that they are very quiet on-road. I like that after living with mud tires on my JL, and KO2's that became louder and louder as they wore. I hope these maintain the quiet as the miles pile up.
