Well, apparently I was scammed by a member (or stolen account of a member?) as he promised shipping info today and I logged in to see that he has been banned :-(

20+ years of buying stuff on line and this is the first time, shame my lessen in trust cost me $1500. The listing offered local pick up and the apparent lie that he was a Marine (I'm retired USAF) set me at ease. Shame on me...

I'll file a police report and provide them his banking info as well as provide his bank a copy of the police report. Nothing will come of it...

Anyway, just hoping my loss will be a cautionary tale and maybe save someone else from being ripped off.

At least you have bank account info so the bank and/or legal authorities can possibly help you. If this was Zelle or Venmo, you'd be even more $hit out luck.

You may want to PM site admins and ask for IP information related to the account. It's a long shot, but sometimes crooks, even cyber-crooks, aren't all that bright.
At the very least they can tell you if they seemed to be based where you thought they were, were hiding behind a proxy, or hanging out in Indonesia.

Service member is a common lie in scams that helps to instill trust.

Different sites handle them differently, so be pleased if they provide some info, but not surprised if they say you need a warrant.

I was admin on a site for years that trafficked much higher value items routinely. I'd try to help people whenever asked, and tried to pre-check anyone in question if asked.
Only one a I ever got wrong was an International Airline pilot. That guy's IP's were all over the place

I was pretty curious why they wouldn't respond to my pm's. I was trying to do local pick up. I just figured they passed over me because my account is so new.

Apparently the local pick up in the ad was used as another confidence builder, it worked on me... I figured if he was selling for pick up or shipping it felt more legit.

I'm guessing someone else got scammed by him as well and that's why he got banned. My guess is he was using PMs to "sell" to at least two people at the same time. He may have ended up with 3000 or 4500 from his scam by getting 2 or 3 to bite :-(

Try working with your bank, see if they can seize/recover anything? Long shot, but higher chance than the police doing anything with an IP address.

Maybe some would frown on it but I would also post his name, location and screen name. Even if banned, it might save someone else, or at least make someone else a little more cautious if they deal with someone with the same name and location.

Sucks especially he took advantage of vet status. Stolen valor pisses me off to no end.

Contact the IC3 Task Force. I am in law enforcement and we have worked together several times. They are Federal and State that work on these types of crimes. I am in Tennessee but search IC3 Task Force and do an online complaint first. I know an agent. Thanks and good luck
