Possibly, but I prefer to wait and see what's on the invoice. Had too many times where a service advisor will tell somebody "we're changing XX part" and then per the paperwork it was something else entirely.

Then there's the possibility that it turns out that's not the problem or only part of the problem. We shall see!

Brought it in 7am yesterday, called them at 4pm to check the status. They had to order some (more) parts, maybe late next week. So now I'm driving a brand new Grand Cherokee 4xe that had 36 miles on it when I left with it!

Like I said, "Then there's the possibility that it turns out that's not the problem or only part of the problem".

Got it back today, but it'll be a few days before I get a chance to take it into the woods. They installed a "switch: transfer case" (5083138AA), then a "module: transfer case" (68483375AC). A trim piece was also replaced due to damage. As expected, I did have to pay the shop rate for them to remove and reinstall my Artec skids.

Like I suspected, they replaced the parts that tell the truck's control modules what mode and range the transfer case is in. As I noted earlier, your transfer case mode and range are mechanically selected/shifted so it's impossible for it to go from 4L to 2H simply through the act of turning the ignition off then back on -- a problem with the electronics can make the truck think it's in a mode/range other than what is actually mechanically selected, but it's nothing more then an erroneous status report, the actual mode/range is reflected in the position of the shift lever.

I finally got the chance to go off-roading since the dealer fixed it. Well, nothing changed, I still get the service 4WD light, still indicates 4L and 2H when I shift back, etc. So I crawled underneath to look at things, and what do I find? Now, if you'll remember, I was to billed shop rate (it was $296 total) for the tech to drop my aftermarket skid plates to do the repair/replacement. Is it simply a coincidence that all the paint lines for the skid-plate screws/bolts are still perfectly lined up?

If I was doing it, on my truck, I'd probably line them all up again if they were at the tightness I was comfortable with when I put it back together.

But I can't see many shops lining things up like that. They are more like - Tighten, done, who cares if it lines up.

Scratches on the bolts line up, some of the allen screws are still packed with dried mud, I really think they didn't do what they claimed. Spoke with the service manager today, I'll drive up there in a couple of weeks. Of course, now that it has 38K on it, electrical problems (like the sensors they replaced?) a few weeks ago aren't covered, but the powertrain (transfer case) is! I can't say I'm particularly encouraged....

That's what I'm doing.
I personally come to a complete stop, put the tranny in neutral, shift into 4 low, then put tranny back into gear. It works every time and is gentle on the gears. If it doesn’t engage perfectly because of gear alignment, just let your foot off the brake and let it rotate while gently pulling back on the t case shifter and it’ll drop right in.

If you reported it and they attempted repairs before the warranty was up, then it's still covered as an unresolved issue that was on record before the end of warranty.
They can't call king's-X on you and say sorry, time ran out, we're done.
If it's a DIFFERENT issue, that's different.
But if you were having problems due to sensors or wiring or whatever, and they have it on a work order and they attempted repairs but you still have that same problem, then it's a problem from when it was still under warranty - they can't walk away from it because of some date line that was crossed.

That's pretty much how I figure it. They said they fixed it. I feel that they probably cleared the codes, replaced some parts, and then didn't get codes. But let's face it, unless they test drove it in 4L for a few hundred yards, then they have no clue if it was really fixed!

Had it back there yesterday, they claim the computer says I shifted into 4L at 5.6 mph, hence the problems. They said come to a full stop, put the trans in neutral, then shift to 4L (even though the manual states coasting in neutral at 1-3 mph). Fine, took it home. Today at the local dump I did exactly that, and still have the same exact problem! Doesn't anyone do a test drive anymore or are they too worried about legal ramifications if they have an accident? Is @JeepCares following any of this?

Rediculous. They must have some part of their lot long enough to drive in a straight line for at least enough time to test this. Do not leave the dealer with it again if it's not fixed. Test it right there on their lot.

I’m actually surprised you didn’t do it before you left the lot the first time. Don’t take the paperwork and run, make them show you the problem is resolved.
