im going to be upgrading my axle shafts and want some opinions. I’m trying to decide between RCV’s for the front or just go with chromoly axle shafts with U joints. I’m assuming one pro to U joints is they would most likely break before the ring and pinion.

You’d have to be doing something insane to break the rcv’s. And your steering in 4wd will be so much smoother. Just skip the 300m and you’ll be well matched to the diff parts.

I had the RCV's in my Power Wagon for about 10 yrs. It steered a lot easier. The things are bomb proof. Never had to rebuild them either. But they are easy to rebuild.

+1 on RCV’s from all my research.

They are on my phase II build list in my head for when I re-do all my suspension and go 38’s or 39’s.

I’ve had RCVs in my JK since May 2010. They are smooth but the ticking drives me nuts. I rebuilt once but ticking again. They were around $1000 when I got them more now. Not sure I’d pay for that ticking again.

My phase II consists of a 3.5 inch lift, beadlocks, 39’s, truss, RCV’s, ball joints and a regear to what I’m not sure yet.. might be 4.10’s if 4.30’s don’t exist then because 4.55 I think would be too tall.

RCVs are what I opted for. A year now with no issues in Alaska.

What is the difference between the 300mm and the other one? Why skip the 300mm? I'm just curious. I've looked into the RCV axles just a little bit. Trying to decide if I want to upgrade my 44's or build 60's

RCV told me verbally that the stronger material is too strong. That the diff components would become the weak link in an event where the axle shaft were really pushed. The axle would break other things. This was during a time where stock was an issue. I could get the 300mm stufff, but the normal one was a wait. They said to wait, so I did.

Did you keep or delete the FAD?

I kept it. I’ve heard a lot about fad failures on earlier jeeps, but have yet to hear it about JL or JT. and RCV is just making it stronger. I didn’t want to lose the functionality, especially with a 4hi auto transfer case. I do have a bullet proof skid on my fad from next venture.
