Good Morning Ya’ll…. 2024 Gladiator Mojave X with only 5,700 miles (Gasser). Our first ’inspection’ since we bought it last year in March.

Last night, I removed the Tazer completely using the appropriate Unmarry, Reboot, and 2 sleep cycles. Drove the jeep around for a few miles to confirm things were ‘good’ (aka, start stop was working). All seems as normal…..

Took it to the dealership this morning for our yearly inspection in Pennsylvania - which includes emissions.

The dealership could not perform the emissions test because they were getting an error…… **Not Ready For Testing**
They asked if we removed or disconnected the battery recently….or got any ‘codes’ (that we would’ve reset)…… Nope, none of that.
They weren’t seeing any codes or any issues either on their end this morning.
So, we did tell them we had a Tazer installed and it was removed last night.

They weren’t blaming it on the Tazer….and were puzzled why they were getting this error.
They recommended we drive it for a couple weeks (without the Tazer) and go back on March 1st in hopes something in the system would either reset or update (or whatever).

Has anyone had any issues like this ??

Is it Tazer related or is there something else going on?
*edit* WTF are these ‘drive cycles‘ I’m reading about🤷‍♀️
Thanks!

It has to be driven about fifty miles at various speeds to get through all the emission cycles in the computer.

Emissions tests no longer are an external check of the system. They are a report from the vehicle computer whether or not the emissions systems are functioning.

Any reset of the system, like replacing the batteries, requires all the emissions tests to be completed again before the computer will report everything working. Removing the Tazer likely caused a system reboot that also reset the emissions data.

What a pain in the ass.......... I mean..... I work from home, so it doesn't get driven that much over the winter. Granted, my husband has been driving it a lot lately due to the weather. He works only about 5 miles away. The thought of having to drive it more / or a certain way (or outside our normal routine) is somewhat ridiculous. Sorry.... just venting.

I surely hope that the driving we do in the next 2 weeks is enough.... but we'll see.

I had to do that with my sister's Compass after replacing the batteries. I just took it out for a drive on the highway one afternoon since she doesn't drive a lot. I used the OBD dongle and tablet to check that the emissions reported ready before taking it back in to be tested again. The guy at the testing station was nice. He explained why and didn't charge me for the failed test.

So, I contacted ZAutomotive…. they confirmed that rebooting the Tazer does reset the emissions data.

However, what he said next totally puzzled me…

It's no issue to just unplug it and plug the security gateway back in. See page 2: https://www.zautomotive.com/zpu/instructions/TazerJLMiniUserGuide1145.pdf

😳 You can just unplug it?? He points me to page 2 but that doesn’t specifically say you can unplug it anytime you want. I tried searching …… Is it that easy?

As long as the dealer doesn't do a computer update, you can just remove the Tazer and not unmarry it. ZAutomotive recommends to unmarry before any dealer visit.

….Can you unmarry and NOT reboot? I didn’t think that was possible either…..

I guess I have to be mindful of telling the dealership NOT to do any updates during an emissions inspection. 🙄

Why do you even need to do an emissions check, on a vehicle that’s barely a year old and only 5,700mi? My county doesn’t even require emissions checks, and nearby counties wouldn’t require it until it’s like 5yrs old or more.

Is this to help fund those Hershey stop lights?

I can also confirm Bill’s explanation of the “internal” emissions need time and lots of mileage to give the readiness readings. I recently did a system reboot/relearn when I recalibrated the throttle body and it’s taken a week’s worth of driving @ 60kms/day for the computer/sensors to sniff out the oxygen sensors, cats, heaters and 5 other emissions components and I’m still waiting for the EGR to “self pass”.

Just drive it…and wait. Up here in Alberta, Canada we don’t have emissions testing. I feel your pain. I don’t know what a failed emissions test costs but if you want to stop guessing if you’ll pass this test or not, I highly recommend the diagnostic tool I have (MUCAR CDE900 Pro) through THINKCAR. When you first plug it in to run a diagnostic, it first runs a “smog test”. You’ll immediately know if you’ll pass your test or not. Emission components it’s checking will read red or green and in our Gladiators, it checks 8 items. Check out the reviews on YouTube to see what I’m talking about.

To make life even easier, you can purchase the FCA SGW unlock license through the tool which opens up a vast new world of diagnostics and resets you couldn’t otherwise do.

Does it have to go to the dealer for the emissions test? Here, we have at least a hundred state authorized locations. You pay about $30, they connect to the OBD port, get a pass or fail response, print a certificate, and transmit the results to the DMV.

Some counties require it annually. Several in Texas does

It’s gonna be the same test no matter where you go….. They hook up to the OBD and read the data.

That’s Pennsylvania for ya….. Every year, we are required to go thru a vehicle inspection (Safety & emissions). It aligns with your registration ‘month’. My registration expires at the end of March, so I’m required to get the inspection done before that.

If you’re UNDER 5,000 miles in any given year, you’re exempt from the OBD emissions test (It’s a visual test). Unfortunately…..I went over that this year.

If you’re under 5,000 miles in any given year - you are exempt from the OBD emissions test. They still perform a ‘visual’ test to make sure all the components are there and functional.

Unfortunately….I went over 5,000 mies. 🙄

Don’t feel bad… I had to bring my Tesla YLR in for emissions testing in NC. I kid you not… It’s just a $ grab.
