I've looked around this forum and found one mention that there is no functional difference on the diesel, just the hitch and wiring. Is this true? Is there any written proof of this?

I'm attaching the 2023 Stellantis Specs showing the diesel only has one tow ratings listed, but I'm also attaching a screenshot from an owner's manual which separates out diesel with tow package and diesel without. There, the towing capacity and payload are the same, but the frontal area of the trailer is different (40sq ft vs 55 sq ft), implying to me at least there is some difference.

Thank you, all.

It gets weirder when you look at the owner's manual chart and see that a Diesel Overland is 40 square feet with or without a tow package, gas OR diesel, yet trailer weights are different... that a Sport S gas is 40sq ft / 4500lbs and a Diesel Sport S is 40 sq ft / 6500 lbs.... that both automatic diesel and gas Rubicon are 55 SQ ft but trailer limit is 6k vs 7k....

What is causing the difference? Is it a sway control linkage?

The plot thickens...

Window sticker from a 2023 Willy's Diesel with tow package lists this under tow package line items:
Trailer–Tow Package $1,195 Class IV Receiver Hitch Trailer–Hitch Zoom

Window sticker from a 2023 Willy's gasser with tow package lists this under tow package line items:
Trailer–Tow Package $895 Class IV Receiver Hitch Trailer–Hitch Zoom

Why the $300 difference, same year, nothing else mentioned?

My Rubicon diesel came with the wiring and plug installed for trailer lights and no receiver.

My understanding is that there is a tow package (rear receiver, plugs and trailer zoom feature) and there is a Max Tow package for the Sport S which is Rubicon Axles, 4.10 gears, bigger battery and alternator, along with the receiver, plugs and camera. The diesel is limited due to cooling issues, not tow package.

Just so folks know, Max Tow is only for gassers and is not applicable to the diesel. All diesels, regardless of trim or tow package, have the stronger Dana 44 axles, identical gear ratios of 3.73, and a few other towing-relevant upgrades just to deal with the diesel itself.

OP, I don't have an answer to your question as that is odd, but maybe it's a Class III aftermarket vs Class IV thing? 4 pin vs 7 pin trailer issue difference? Might be something in here:

Even if my post is not related to answer the first question:

the Diesel all got same wide axles with 3.73 gear ratios.
ok.

So the only difference of the axles compared to a GAS Rubicon in terms of axles is the lockers and gear ratio of 4.10?

So I could buy gasser Rubicon axles and just change gear ratio to 3.73 and have Diesel Rubion axles?

I am asking as my overland JT in Europe came as it is, no lockers, and nothing else you can buy in EU. There is no Rubicon JT. (sure some imports of 3.6 gassers)

either you have narrow or wide axles
both is not possible.

I basically want to swap to Rubicon axles and as I m only running 35s, then switch gears from my overland axles to it.
keep 3.73 ratios.

so the question again:
What is the difference between a 3.6 gas Rubicon and 3.0 Diesel Rubicon axle-wise?
