Under the air box, what’s this thing?

For lack of a better description, that's the "ram air" intake for your engine. It picks up air from an opening on the right side of your grille as you drive and ports it into the bottom of the filter box.

That's the air ram that feeds your air box. If you follow it to the front grille you can see just how much of an actual air intake you have .Not much.

Huh, never knew it had an air draw there. I wounder if that's the cuplrit in some "gulping" water issues I've heard abought? Never seen it just heard of one offs were they suck a water load.

I left it when I put in the snorkel.

Due to the larger inlet slot in the filter box up near the hood, the engine shouldn't pull in any water through the lower ram intake anyway... unless you have water also coming over the fender flare that is, in which case only a snorkel is going to prevent water ingestion.

That's the air scoop that runs to the grill
While at speed it will force fresh air up to the air box and does not connect has a 1" gap to prevent water being pushed up to the air box in the event of water entry during fording of water
