Hi Everyone,

Anyone found any low ash or ESP (emissions system protections) oil that meets OEM recommendations? I guess they are designed to decrease regens. We have Penzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 in my area that is well regarded on the forum, but their website does not mention anything regarding emissions.

Thanks in advance, JM

I use Shell Rotella T6 which works well and is also highly regarded. Its cost friendly when buying a 3 gallon pack on amazon.

Thanks for the input UT! While that looks like a tempting choice, it looks like that one does not meet spec.

From the gladiator diesel oil thread re Rotella T6

“I personally contacted Shell to verify. They said they do not have an oil that meets the MS-12991 spec nor do they have future plans to meet spec.”

Is there a low ash oil that meets spec?

It may not state that spec specifically but thats not a huge deal. MOPAR states oils meeting equivalent standards are ok, including API. T6 Meets this req as it also hits both API CI-4 and CES 20081, both ok for the same engine in the Rams. As you search, keep in mind those specs as well. You can always use the dealer oil too.

Ok, so I looked into this quite a bit, and I could be wrong about T6 (not afraid to admit that lol), I just know that Jeep themselves mentioned T6 was ok at some point due to the owners manual update being less strict on the requirements. I may switch to another oil since T6 is still iffy I guess, but using it once is no biggie imo. However, when looking for "low ash" not all oils say low ash on the bottle, but if they meet CK-4 or CJ-4, they are technically "low ash". Finding "low-ash" stated on MS-12991 oils is sort of a PITA. Hope this helps!

From what I've come across, every MS-12991 compliant oil is also ACEA A3/B4 compliant. To be an ACEA A3/B4 compliant oil, it must be mid or full SAPS -- it cannot be low ash and be compliant with that spec. Ergo, if one insists on sticking with MS-12991 compliant oil then no low ash (and truly DPF friendly) oil is available.

I appreciate all your input. I live on an island and our tiny highways are not fast enough for manual regen so low ash is important to me. I drive them like a crazy person but it seems that is not enough. It sounds like to Shell Rotella and Mobil ESP are both solid choices.

All the best and thanks for your help.

No problem. Also, If warranty is a concern, stick to the Mobil, the verbage used on everything is ridiculous and if they say anything, the Mobil checks more boxes.

I've been using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 for a while now. It meets the CJ-4 and CK-4.

After doing some research. Think I'm going to go with Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40. It's low ash.

I started using what Rusty PW uses. I will post an oil analyst when i change it. There is a thread on here discussing this if you want to read through all the pages.
