Dang narrow sidewalk!
That;s the only place I've done it, where the sidewalk is only curb to fence/building and the trucks back in until their tires hit, blocking almost all of the sidewalk. Certainly blocking it so wheelchairs can't get through, and there are a lot of people in them in the area I'm traversing.

From what I can find, no one can actually quote a low, give the number of the code and so on, to show any state bans leaving them in place- EXCEPT if they block the view of the rear plate.

So, it's bunk that you must remove the ball mount or "hitch" when not towing - UNLESS it obscures the license plate.
False
Jurisdiction dependent of course.

"In Illinois, the law regarding trailer hitches left on vehicles not towing is specified in 625 ILCS 5/12-614. This law states that if a trailer hitch extends more than 4 inches beyond the vehicle's rear bumper, the ball mount must be removed when not towing. If the hitch is a single, permanently mounted assembly that cannot be easily removed, the ball must be covered with a red cover. "

That gets only an AI text, and links below fail "404" errors and so on. Still can't find the text of the code other than AI - and that could be years old.
Still looking for the current text of the code (rather than AI which can be wrong)

Yeah, funny - sort of, but -

Maybe you aren't familiar with the term ball mount?

You lock it in place to prevent theft of the piece, or what's attached to it (like a boat trailer, etc.)

It's a real problem around construction sites, or where you park with your boat in tow.
You pull the pin, slide the ball mount out of the receiver, roll the boat, camper, whatever, around to your truck, insert the ball mount, and drive away with whatever was being towed.
So you lock the ball mount into the receiver, and lock the trailer onto the ball.
Well I know what the middle one is used for. You dirty dog, what's in that search history of yours?

I take no responsibility for the website failures of the state. I certainly pay them enough to make their websites work

HAHA - - that's the results of a clean search for that term to show people the correct terms for certain parts.

The people wanting to fight to keep blocking sidewalks with their hitch because they haven't seen the law might not want to look up bumper height laws either. I'm not certain my stock Gladiator is legal in Illinois.

Strike that, I KNOW Jeeps in general are technically illegal in Illinois because there's a law regulating how far your headlights can be from the corner of the vehicle. The only time that's "inspected" is if you need to go through a title inspection. Nails kit-car guys, like the Manx. Just like the hitch thing, it's one of those that you can get away with right up until you piss off the wrong cop.
If you're lucky, a judge would throw it out on a factory built vehicle, but I have no faith in the courts.

Just found out - it keeps showing up in searches, but it never left the state of being a bill - it didn't pass.

This -
https://ilga.gov/ftp/legislation/96...es to the presence of the motor vehicle hitch.

Did not pass.

But it keeps getting reverenced.

Still no state comes up with actually having such a law - and no one (I've searched RV and other forums in past years for this exact same thing as someone keeps popping up with it being a law)
No one can show a CURRENT code that is actually LAW.

They can own whatever they can afford, they just need to learn to drive and park it, including the regulations governing it.

That would then be my next problem to deal with. For some reason that has never been an issue for me...

Fun story: My cousin got rear-ended at a stop light with his hitch in. The guy who hit him got a ticket for that. He got a ticket for the equipment violation.
So there's a chance that I could pull the hitch from someone's illegally parked truck and they get a ticket and an assault charge for attacking me over it. At most I'd get what? Vandalism with no property damage? Maybe a "criminal mischief"?
That's bull shit. Show me one law in writing that implies I can't leave my hitch installed? Show me 1 law that remotely implies that you can alter other people's property. Just because you've gotten away with it so far doesn't make it right and it certainly doesn't make it legal. If the hitch is blocking your driveway or something that's another story. If you're too dumb to walk without running into it that's your problem.

Wheelchairs that fit on a curb that you're calling a sidewalk? Unicycle wheel chairs? An actual sidewalk is wide enough for a full size wheel chair to fit past a person. Nobody's hitch is blocking that. If you're walking on the curb behind the stalls, and then crouching down behind and tampering with people's property, you're likely going to get shot one day. The pintle ring stays in the JLURs receiver with a lock 24/7 both for recovery purposes and to help keep from smashing the spare into the rear hatch coming off a ledge. Guess how far that 39" tire sticks out past the rear bumper? Even the factory 35 was way out there. I agree with your sentiment of blocking sidewalks, but only a douche backs into spots in a Jeep or a truck anyway. The rear overhang on some trucks is 2'+. If that dumbass backs in all the way to the tires he deserves towed and it's not the hitch that's the problem.
