Gotta love all the tactical tims out of touch with the reality of being poor and mass transit. What if there's already people sitting in the back row? What if it's a crowded train? Just go buy a Bentley and drive that to the pizza joint where you make minimum wage for safety? Do you guys freak out if there's someone in line behind you at the grocery store? Constantly spin in circles to watch the guy in front of you, the guy behind you, and any shoppers walking by? I'm all for situational awareness, but unprovoked random attacks could catch anyone off guard. You're not John Wick and life's not a movie. Fortunately these type of random attacks with no warning signs are wildly rare. Pretend it's your "preparedness" that has kept this from happening to you but in reality you have better odds of winning the lottery and getting struck by lighting on the way to cash in your ticket.

Being AWARE of your surroundings is not enough. You need to process your surroundings and make safe & smart decisions to put yourself into a ‘safer position’ to defend yourself.

The thought of getting on any subway, makes me cringe……. Personally? I’d avoid it completely and find another safer method of transport. If you can’t avoid the subway….**In this situation…. I’d walk to the back of the subway car and sit in a last seat with nobody behind you OR I’d stand in the corner.

You should constantly be ‘thinking’ and ‘deciding’ how to position yourself to prevent or avoid unsafe conditions, avoid potential threats (whatever that looks like) And/or be in a better position to defend yourself. Looking for exits or ways to remove yourself from any situations that may escalate.
Remember, she didn't grow up in the states.
Likely, not aware we are such a dangerous place to live.

#1) Find a safer method of transportation.

If that’s not possible….
#1) Sit in the very last seat of the subway car with nobody behind you.
Or…. Stand in the corner looking forward.

You can’t protect yourself if you can’t see it coming.

Like the majoirty of the population - people don’t have ‘self defense’ on their minds and/or are too pre-occupied to think about it. And even more so now-a-days with people glued to their phones.
Do you know how silly that sounds to someone who lives in a big city, Chicago, NYC, and other places?
safer methods of transportation? Good luck. A friend who worked for the department of corrections in NY and lives there says owning a car was beyond too expensive - $500/month for parking. Some people simply don't have a choice! And sometimes, there's no better alternative. I've been on subways and elevateds - and there are many times, you have maybe 2 or 3 choices of a place to stand or sit.
The last seats may be taken, hell, all seats may be taken. You have never been in such a place, I can tell.
There are people who simply have no choice. And, there are times, there are no better methods of transportation, other than walking blocks, or miles - tell me THAT is safe.

I gotta ask - does everyone here know who that woman was? I ask, because most of the media, especially print, has ignored it as of a day ago.
Do people know who the killer is? Likely not, unless they really dig as it's not a widely spread bit of info. Do they know his track record?
The young woman wasn't born and raised in the USA.

I can't imagine being this scared all the time, seems exhausting.

And travelling by car is over 30x more likely to kill you than public transit.

Yeah, you can find it but because it's not fitting a certain pattern, some media has pretty much ignored it (until it became a political ball)
It took a while in some cases. Some will report it and drop it, unlike some past stories.

Sure, now they increase security.

In any case, it's a good example of how it's impossible to be totally safe at all times, no matter how perfect you think you are. Easy to armchair this and say she should have been aware. Sorry, no.

I generally dont go into large city's especially those with high crime that are usually accompanied by derelict local leadership.
Which is an option...if your lifestyle affords it. A 23 year old refugee from a war torn country working at a pizza place doesn't exactly have the options you or I do. Public transit is the only option when those are your circumstances. The idea that she's any way to blame or in the wrong for just trying to survive is absurd. All the advice from those with means and the tactical wannabes that have never even seen a real conflict in person are useless for people in her shoes. Not to mention her having survived in a bomb shelter in a real war zone I guarantee she wasn't remotely afraid of riding the train in north Carolina, and she shouldn't have to be.

She was a Ukrainian refugee, and he is a violent career criminal, who's rap sheet goes back over a decade.

He was out on cashless bail from a prior felony arrest. His own mother said he needed to be incarcerated but the judge felt otherwise, and now a young woman is dead.

Yeah, I wanted to be really careful in how I worded things,
but you said exactly what I was thinking.

So far, no warnings - trying to keep it that way!

No, my advice is not useless. Stay out of city's where public safety isn't a priority. Stay out of city's that have alot of crime and where crime isn't punished effectively. Don't go to places that allow petty theft but if you have to, understand that criminals in the area know that they wont be punished or know that the punishment will be minimal.

But your right, it wasn't her fault and she shouldn't have to fear for her safety out in public.
