My wife found about about the massive North Rim Fires at the Grand Canyon happening right now( 100k+ acres). Out or curiosity I looked in the Moab area, as I've planned a trip there late September, only to find out there's been a sizable fire through the La Sal area, definitely hitting the ranch my buddy and I were going to rent for our trip.
I absolutely feel for the Ranch owners, as that's a horrible thing to happen to anyone, but we should all keep an eye out for the areas we travel to for off-roading in case of such disasters.

Fires are all too common out here, and far too easy to ignite, become out of control, raging, and dangerous. Recently at one of the trips my club went on (I couldn’t go), a couple of the members saw a fallen tree smoking a little bit. Ends up some yahoos were shooting into the dead log and the heat from the bullets started the log smoldering, which if left unchecked could have turned into a very bad disaster with potential lives threatened or taken due to all the campers in the area. My club members took immediate action, plus calling Cal Fire, and prevented what could have been a major fire disaster.
Anyone traveling to these areas from eastern-ish states, please check the fire websites, check for fire restrictions, get your campfire permits, and please be very cautious.

As someone that has spent most of my life out west dealing with wildfires, what the hell is a "campfire permit"? 🤣

I always try to check for fires before I travel out West. You don’t think of Moab and fires, but the La Salles are right there.

Both clubs I attend require us to have this when camping/overlanding with them.

We lost our cabin in the Rodeo-Chediski Fire in Arizona, back-in 2002.

Gaia and OnX both have layers for fires both current and historical which is super handy. I like the historical ability to see if I’m going to potentially be in a burn scar so I can think about possibility of fire weakened trees when driving/camping.

We get our fires in the East, too. Large areas of the NJ Pine Barrens regularly burn, and a few years ago we nearly lost our cabin in upstate NY to a forest fire that burned to within a couple hundred yards, almost certainly started by a careless camper up on the mountain above us.

Wow, great resource! We´re heading to Moab in October and may hit a couple Colorado trails, so this will be good to look at before we depart. October is usually not the fire season, but you never know.

Thanks!

Need more control burns to limit the damage
