Per the article the grand is the first implementation. That says it will be used in other platforms. Which platforms and when would only be speculation.

That powertrain is pretty in line with the Taco, Colorado, Frontier, and Ranger.

Hmm. Maybe Dakota? I can see it in the JL and JT. It's just the way everyone is going.

Yea, the work it takes to design it, odds are it will be in many other platforms. I would not be shocked if they put it in the Gladiator, but would not be shocked if they did not.

Retired. Beach bum.
Still too small and high stressed for a truck even a Gladiator. Just stick with the Hemi, getting rid of the wonky lifters that shut down and have a short life, or perfect them. A 5.7 Hemi with 400/400 hp/tq, at under 4,000 rpm’s would be perfect.

I had the Ford 2.0 eco-boom in an all wheel drive, tow rated Escape.

Power, hp
200-252 hp (149-188 kW)/ 5,500
Torque, lb ft
221-270 lb-ft (300-366 Nm)/ 1,750-4,500

The protections they have to put on small engines, unnaturally aspirated, created problems.

Towing a trailer with half of the maximum load, the computer would go into "Engine Save Mod", deactivating the turbo, and then left with a lil 2.0 with retarded tuning.

Not fun.

Wanted a medium sized pick up, naturally aspirated, and selected a Gladiator.

No such issues, and love it!

The Frontier is running an NA V6 similar to the Gladiator, but slightly larger with more power.

The GM twins turbo 4 cylinder is bigger (2.7L) so I wonder if it's under a bit less stress.

The way I understand the 2.0L is it's not viable in the Gladiator as you can't cool it AND meet required towing performance.

I'm curious if this one will have a closed deck vs. the existing open deck design given the increased output numbers.

This new 2.0L has port and direct injection which should alleviate the concern of carbon build up. Although it seems for all the wailing and pearl-clutching the topic garnered (usually by people that didn't own a Jeep with the engine anyway), no one really experienced it during my time browsing JL forum. And those that installed catch cans on these engines didn't catch much at all in them. I don't necessarily love that this has a variable vane turbo vs. the existing twin scroll turbo. One "dumb" turbo already adds enough complication, and now it got worse.

I had one in my '21 JL. I sometimes miss it. Not so much the noises it made while running and favoring premium gas. But it certainly was a different experience in the Rubicon JL vs. the 3.6L in the somewhat heavier Mojave. The 3.6L sounds much nicer though and the power delivery is much more predictable. Less throw you back into the seat and more of a smooth pull. It's hilly in Pennsylvania and my favorite thing about the 3.6L over the 2.0L is actually having helpful engine braking while going down hill. Tapping the brakes downhill made the 8-speed in both Jeeps downshift, usually to 4th and no further, and the 3.6L can actually hold your decent where the lower-compression, and smaller 2.0L just couldn't. On long accents, the 3.6L will fall back a lot further in the gears than the 2.0L did, but that's just because the engines make their peak torque at very different RPM ranges.

I miss getting 22 mpg on long freeway trips vs. barely breaking 17mpg (so far, only have 3k miles on it).

The 3.6L has its issues, but it's nice that they are well-documented, and a brave enough home mechanic could likely take care of them on their own. I didn't have that same feeling when I opened the hood and looked in on the 2.0L. But I would own another 2.0L, and I'd own another well before I considered an EcoBoost.

I actually saw one yesterday in a GC Stellantis/FCA evaluation vehicle. Looks very complicated. Eight spark plugs, two separate fuel systems. I could barely see the engine under all the tubing and wire harnesses. Like the 3.6, a bunch of stuff has to come off just to access spark plugs. Probably too much for the average backyard mechanic. From the description, the mechanicals seem pretty solid. Hopefully the engine management system is robust. I miss my 1975 Dodge Dart slant 6. (in some ways, at least).

An idea - Stellantis should replace the 2.0 with a 1.0 - with even larger turbos! Just carrying the logic to its natural conclusion.
Natural conclusion: Jeep Gladiator powered by Dyson. Those hair dryers are amazing.
