The 4.0L may not have been gutsy but they were reliable. And if it ever did break down, it left a trail of rainbow colored bread crumbs from the rear main seal for the wrecker to follow.

I tend to think XJs (and YJs) are a lot like VW Bugs- most everyone of a certain age has a story about one. Another friend while turning into our high school spun the front half shaft right out at the entrance, causing the rest of us to be late that morning. (Thanks Connor.) Good times.
I've got xj stories for days, and having wheeled them for years I stand by the fact that the power was barely adequate especially at elevation. Even the 3.6L with 100 more hp is barely adequate on a truck this size at 10k+ feet.

I've owned several, starting in 1987. Not a one ever leaked oil. Even the 100,000 mile salvage engine I built and put in my car - it didn't have leaks when I salvaged it, doesn't leak now, over 12 years later.

I had one with a slow leak from the rear main. I made it worse when I replaced it. 😆

Your truthiness is getting in the way of my nostalgia, Bill. 😂

My current 4.0 has a crack in the front of the valve cover - does that count (the Jeep it came out of was flipped after hitting an embankment)

Slowly but surely they are abandoning those ridiculous upcharges that pushed the msrps into the stratosphere.
They'll just set the base price in the stratosphere!

There are 11 more chances for the 392 JT to be announced.
Miracles can happen ……..Riiiiiiiiight……..🙄

The Gladdy has only been out for 5 years….. A test flight….. Makes me wonder if the Gladdy will stay in production for the long haul. With the new Dakota coming out…. It’ll be hard to compete with the mass of consumers who aren’t interesting in ‘Jeep’-ish truck. The Dakota has a reputation from the past….. that’ll bring folks out of the wood-work.

That is exactly what made me go back to Jeep back in 2015. I also had a Ram 2500 I bought that year but by 2020 had gotten down to where it had barely been driven 500 miles . It literally was good for hardtop and nit even really very good in Snow unless in 4WD and then it was not the greatest. I also had gotten a JKU in 2015 and it was the fact it would just go most anywhere that convinced me to get rid of the Ram and Go with the Gladiator because I wanted to not only come out of the woods but go in the woods too.

Really? They’re known for leaking from the RMS and filter housing.

Really. And since it's the same design as a 258, add several more to my list going back to 1975.
Filter housing? They use a spin on filter.

Pan gasket is a thing and I wonder if that was usually the real leak but getting blamed on the rear main. I've seen two that leaked at the pan in that exact area.

Man if they still offered a manual transmission it would be really hard for me not to to trade my '24 in for a Reign gladiator. But I refuse to make the switch to an automatic so it looks like my '24 is sticking with me to the grave.

It’s where it bolts on. It’s a common problem a kills a lot of starters. It starts before the 258. 4.0ls leak. You’ve even fortunate.
