25 years ago Buick (and I expect other GM) put batteries under the back seat if their sedans, and it wasn’t that hard to pop the back seat bottom loose. They’d definitely be cooler.
Grand Cherokee has it under the passenger seat.

If you think the jt engine bay is packed.....
Maybe you've worked on the WK2 and know how packed they are.

I just replaced the 8 year old Mopar battery in my Grand Cherokee. It looked like new. Even the posts were still shiny.

Shadowspapa, you're right on that packed engine bay. I just did my oil pan gasket, radiator and waterpump. The radiator was the worst part.

Recently I had been having issues with my electronics starting to fail in my gladiator.

The Auto stop/start symbol come up on my dash months ago (which I actually wasn’t upset about) then more recently remote start stopped working, which was more annoying as I live close to work and would start it from inside 10 minutes before I left. Then I was having messages like “aux function unavailable” and “parking sensors disabled” etc. etc.

The battery had been testing fine but finally decided to replace it. Once I replaced it, it came up with an unclearable code and a message “service shifter”.

I know from searching the forum and all over the net that the message seems fairly common, with a number of ways people have fixed it.

Short story long, I had to have it towed less than a kilometre to my mechanic, because I found that pulling the park release cord only works while you’re pulling on it and won’t allow the engine to run once you’ve released the brake, making it impossible to flat tow.

Side note; the nearest dealership is 3 hours away in Melbourne, as they all seem to slowly but surely be abandoning Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler, presumably to make way for all the Chinese crap coming into the country.

After 3 days of scratching their heads, they managed to find a SECOND SMALLER BATTERY underneath the main battery. Changed that out and everything is fine again (including auto stop/start) :(

I could be wrong but I haven’t found a single sources of information to say that they have a second battery. In fact the tray under the main battery showed no indication that there was anything hidden under it!

Anyways, hopefully this is some helpful info for you guys. Sorry for the long rant.

Cheers legends!

My dad had a 1954 Chevy truck that had the 6V battery (batteries? I think it had two?) under the floorboards, and the access panel was covered by the floor mats. I remember back before most cars came with inside hood releases, someone must have tried to steal the battery because he came outside in the am and the hood was open but nothing appeared to be messed with.

i know we have several examples of batteries living in the passenger space, but I’ll share that 25 years ago, I switched out my F150s dead battery in the engine compartment with a new Optima, three weeks later in traffic a horrible smell started in the cab, then came a billow of smoke from the hood, got off the road, popped the hood, and stood there and watched that battery do a full melt down, got out the fire extinguisher to hose it down. Ok, 1 in a million right? Keep those sulfuric acid filled boxes as far away from you as possible.

Like, where else could it go in one of those. It was all engine and shrouding to keep the air flow over that engine

Good point. Back in the 70’s I had a buddy with a Porsche that was over charging the battery. Smelled like cheese eggs. And that was while we were inside, driving, with the battery behind us in the engine bay (914).

Not sure what actually caught fire - but L/A batteries themselves don't burn. Even the housing has to reach a crazy temperature - prolonged, and often direct flame, for it to ignite. Stuff around it, yeah, but the bigger risk is the hydrogen gas exploding, with acid going everywhere.
Even fire-fighters fire prevention organizations say "batteries themselves don't burn, it's the stuff around them"

The thing that surprises me is the 3 days of head scratching by your mechanic. Replacing the aux battery is a fairly mundane task and something that is not difficult to diagnose. So either your mechanic is not up to par on stuff or he was pulling your leg for 3 days and wasn't even working on it, either way it might be time to find a new mechanic.

It wasn’t flaming, more like a melt down, when it was done, it was a blob, about 2/3 of the case /housing survived. what didn’t was the plastic battery box stand, and the inter plastics of the fender well below the battery, replaced all of that and threw a in new battery, ran perfect for another few years before I sold it.

I grew up in a town of 7,000 and to this day, they don't have a Jeep dealership or much of anything there, for that matter. Can't say I'd trust any mechanic there, either.
