My 2020 Gladiator Overland has 57,000 miles now and I have used Mobil 1 (0W20) on each oil change, with a filter since the Wave Services ran out. I change at about 6-7,000 miles. It is mostly driven at lower speeds on local roads with a 700 mile trip, twice a year from Alabama to Florida.

It has started needing 1 quart at about 2-3,000 miles for the last two oil changes. There are no visible leaks and the coolant is clean. Is this normal or should I consider changing to higher viscosity oil because of the warmer climate? Thanks for any advice you have!

That oil is going somewhere. Per Jeep's standards - that amount of consumption is not cause for concern - BUT - knowing what we know about tolerances in modern engines I would take that as a sign that something isn't working as intended.

Check your PCV system, see if it's overly dirty, check your tailpipe (is it burning oil?).

They don’t typically burn oil. I’m hard on mine with heavy towing and heavy on the throttle and it’s never used one drop. Also a 2020. I change the oil when the light comes on. Mobile 1 0w-20 and Mopar filters. I am going to switch to every 5k mile oil changes. I just don’t drive it very often anymore now that it’s recently retired from work duty. I’ve only driven it a few thousand miles since it’s last oil change.

I would suggest changing your oil when down a quart, instead of adding one fresh quart to 4 used oil that has cycled through dozens and dozens of heat cycles. I changed my first oil&filter at 2,500 miles myself. Then used Jeep Cares 2 free changes at 6,500, then 10,500, since then I have changed twice more, once at 15,000, then at 19,000. Here we are at 20,200 and have never needed to add a drop between changes. I use the same full synthetic 0w20 the dealer where I bought mine from. MOPAR Full synthetic with MS6395 standard.

lol why?

It shouldn’t be burning oil like that, but topping it off with a fresh qt of oil certainly doesn’t hurt anything.

Have you inspected the intake manifold for excessive oil deposit? Maybe the PCV is letting the engine ingest too much vapors from the crank case. (If there is a visible wet film behind the throttle blade, and maybe backside of blade wet from oil, Id inspect/replace the PCV.
My 2023 started pushing oil into the fresh inlet tube by the air filter (to the point where the air filter got oil on it). And my 2025 just started to suck too much oil into the intake (luckily I started to notice it filling my catch can at a rapid pace). Just a thought.......

2020 model year may need the updated PCV valve.

I go between changes - 5,000-7,000 miles and don't drop but maybe 1/4 a quart if even that much. Typically it only goes just a touch below full.

No, viscosity has nothing to do with it and once the engine is up to temperature, it's all the same in the engine anyway. It's the engine temperature you need to think of, not the weather outside, unless it never gets cold then you can go to a 5w but the second number has nothing to do with the weather.

Thanks for the info Papa. Is there a bulletin on the pcv update?

A person could purchase the PCV mentioned in the TSB and swap it themselves............

Would you recommend that? It makes no difference if the other oil has been heat cycled or not. If it hasn’t broken down due to heat which is pretty much impossible with synthetic fluid unless you run it out of water, adding a quart hurts absolutely nothing.
