What would make this noise at the knuckle?

I can hear a noise from inside the Jeep so I put it on the lift and spun the tire. The noise is the same weather the wheel is turned or not.

Check your brake pads. Have you been wheeling lately? Could have a rock in the works somewhere but sounds like a loose brake pad to me.

Would that still allow the wheel to spin that freely though? I’d think it would catch just enough to disrupt the rotation with the mass of an entire shaft.

Just depends on how jammed up it is. If it were fully engaged or disengaged, it wouldn't be clicking?

I haven't been in mud. I did wheel over the median on the highway because traffic came to a complete stop and people were driving backwards down the shoulder. it was a decent crest such that I couldn't see cars over it. It sounds more like metal clicking.

To eliminate the FAD, try spinning both wheels together. If the noise stops, look further into the FAD.
Honestly, it does sound like a stick or something hitting an axle joint or something similar.

Following. Scheduled to help a friend, @tredzlitely, with his JL that’s making a clicking noise. Planning to pull the shafts and potentially replace u joints, depending on what we find. Probably not going to mess either it for a couple of weeks due to schedules.
