I had the 5” Uconnect system in my 2018 JL. It is not good. Try to spring for the upgrade if possible.

Does that mean you no longer have the JL or the 5 in? Did you upgrade or get rid of the vehicle?

Looks like the 7in upgrade is closer to $2500, cant bring myself to do that. Unless more incentives drop, that's the cost of an entire aftermarket stereo, sub, speakers and amp.

But upgrading that head unit seems like a pain, are the insane audio ones true plug and play, no functionality lost?

I traded the JL in on a JT Overland with the 8.4-inch system. There weren't any good options, IMO, for swapping out the system in the JL. I imagine options for the JT are non-existent considering how new it is.

I'm going to go full aftermarket at this point. $3000 will put in a nasty aftermarket system and still come in a grand cheaper than 7 inch upgrade with Alpine Audio. Hoping the Insane Audio JL unit drops soon, I assume that will be the same unit for the JT. I'll keep post updated or create new thread on the process as I move forward.

So I've ordered a Gladiator Sport S and am thinking the 5inch Uconnect 3 is a tad anemic for my taste. So I was weighing going for the 7 inch display, but when building on the website when you select the 7 inch for $995 it seems to force you into the Cold Weather group and the Convenience group for an additional $1000 dollars.

This makes simply upgrading from the 5 inch to 7 inch a $2085 upgrade. Is this correct?

Not a big fan of $40k vehicle having a decidedly base model head unit in the first place, but a 2k upgrade? Ouch......

Then starts the cycle of pricing this thing into overland/rubi range. A dilemma I've seen in a few threads already.

Am I mistaken? Cant his be split apart if ordering? Need to know what I'm getting into if I change specs.
You should Winter in Wisconsin, then you'll need that cold weather group.

I much prefer the winters in Satellite Beach Florida, they are remarkably mild and the women instinctively flow like the salmon of Capistrano.....

Well that's not really an issue, because it would seem on the Sport and Sport S, the 7 inch group forces you into the Cold weather package (I live in FL) and the convenience group. So the 7 inch $995 upgrade is actually a $2000 upgrade.
That is not the case. My JLU has the 7" screen without Cold Weather package, Convenience package, etc.

And, I was able to order a JT Gladiator the same way if I had wanted.

In the end I elected to go ahead and order all of the above together because this time around I wanted all those options, but I did build some in the configurator that only had the 7" screen.

Well crap, it appears that they made another change. They're always changing things up. NOW, it appears that you do have to take the Convenience Package if you want the 7" screen. $1,590 to upgrade the radio screen. But, that does automatically give you Sirius XM which is awesome, remote start which is awesome, HVAC filtering which is great, and dual-zone auto climate control. So you do get some nice goodies.

Curious, the website configurator locks you into the additional upgrades and I watched my dealer try and enter the 7 inch group without the additional technology package and it still forced an error.

What model JT are you building? As I understand the 7 inch group on the Overland and Rubicon's are standard, so the cold weather and convenience packages are separate options.

It seems to me, you cannot upgrade a Sport S to the 7 inch without the other two options. I'd love to be wrong though.

I am building the Sport S. I used to be able to build with the 7-inch screen (called the Technology Package in literature) by itself, but today it's forcing me to add the Convenience Package also. The Cold Weather Package is not forced upon me though. Hmm...

About 6 months ago I checked and Alpine had a system with about a 7 inch screen that also had a CD player in it, around $1200 if memory serves me correctly. Found another system by another big name brand as well. Point was go ahead and get the standard 5 inch screen and no problem to get any aftermarket system that would do navigation, phone, stereo, CD etc and not be forced to get $2500 of do dads from Jeep that I would not care about. Less expensive options are out there folks.

The Alpines certainly looks nice and I don't mind some high price stuff if it's worth it. That deck will most likely be $2500-$3000. That's a tad much for me right now, as I plan on new AMP, speakers, sub, etc.

Right now, I'm hoping for $1200-1500 for insane audio deck, if not that then I will do the 7 inch upgrade myself, as seen on the JL forums. Also, I've been following Annie at Car Stereo Chick and keeping up to date on JL audio upgrades, very good reading for those interesting in aftermarket sound options.
