I learned to repair my windshield myself with the Rain-X glass repair kit. It actually filled the chip to almost completely clear about half the time. I never had a chip spread and I sold my '15 JKU with it's original windshield when I ordered my JTR.

I should probably learn how to do this. I could practice on my Jeep before i finally replace the windshield.

The directions are very straightforward and it doesn't even take that long. I'm shopping for a better kit now so I can maybe get more than half to look like they "disappeared".

I think I cursed myself by initially replying to this thread . Big crack yesterday and had it replaced with OEM today. Here we are windowless. I'd have to say Safelite does a super job, but possibly that's because I was just down the road from their headquarters

I point the finger at the glass getting thinner to get lighter to meet CAFE standards more that layout and design. Thinner lighter glass needs to be stiffer to resist aero loading which means it is potentially more brittle .

Don't forget to point the finger at the fact that windshields (and really any other fixed window) is designed to be a structural piece to the panel it is installed in. Mainly for crash safety, but also for a little bit of lightness.

However, I don't really know how this applies to Jeeps since, you know, they fold down. Strange that a bunch of JT's and JL's need glass so often. You'd think something completely flat like the YJ would have a harder time.

I'm going to buy one of the chip repair kits. My windshield is long gone but my wife's has four chips but no cracks. I watched enough youtube vids last night to be convinced it's worth a shot.

I wish that was the case. But my JL is on a 3.5" lift and I'm about to put in my 3rd windshield.

That's just cause your in Colorado where they lay down sand/pea gravel in the winter instead of salt. Its almost a yearly tradition at this point. I expect at least one chip/crack every spring with my JK and TJ.

There is. Find a reputable window tint shop in your area and ask them for clear bra on your windshield. Every Jeep I’ve owned has had it and I’ve never had a chip or break

Even worse, I live near a landfill and the damn trucks around here drop debris all the time. Most of my windshield breaks have been long the road next to it.

When i get around to buying my 3rd windshield, I’m avoiding that road at all costs. It’s the main road to the grocery and other things but I’ll just have to go around. Even my wife’s old Subaru lost a windshield on that damn road.

When i get around to buying my 3rd windshield, I’m avoiding that road at all costs. It’s the main road to the grocery and other things but I’ll just have to go around. Even my wife’s old Subaru lost a windshield on that damn road.

Yea that would add some extra debris I imagine. You'd think someone would have engineered a DOT approved product that wouldn't chip or crack nearly as easily as new generation jeep glass. I've heard good things about the optic armor windshields but its not DOT approved for on road use. .

The solution exists. Someone just has to develop it enough to get the price down.

Something like that would be wonderful! The issue is that I don't think DOT will approve this stuff (or anything like it). Optic armor is pretty resistant to cracks and breaks, but the DOT wont approve it due to in an emergency it cant be broken to let rescue workers in/someone trapped out. So someone needs to come up with a way to make this stuff break on command and then we'd be in business!

Well, first cracked windshield on the JT. - 3-4 week waiting time for a new one

It’s a spider crack. If it doesn’t spread, I’ll probably wait to replace it. Surely will happen again soon enough after reading all these posts of agony. .

When I do finally replace it, the next stop will be at the tint place for that clear bra and hopefully better protection.

I think I'm in luck since I live in SC.

Three states — Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina — waive the deductible for windshield replacement and repairs as part of comprehensive coverage as mandated by state law because driving with a damaged windshield is dangerous. They are called “zero deductible” states.
