Sorry to hear about your mishap.

With that said I would love to have that top to use with my camper top build idea. If the insurance company totals the top out I would consider purchasing it.

Good luck getting your new toy fixed up quick and correct.

Man that sucks. I already have a scratch on my black hard top -- don't know how it got there or why it doesn't just rub off! I wanted the body color hard top but I figure the black one is a lot harder to visibly scratch/damage.

My windshield recently broke. As someone who likes restoring classic cars I look at it this way: at least it's new and parts are still (or at least will be...) available!

File a claim, get a new top, have it painted, and forget it ever even happened. Sell this hard top on the forum ;)

The jeep tops are not made of fiberglass. They are made of a material called SMC. Polyester resin will not bond properly with SMC so make sure you buy a product that is compatible. I made a top for my JK8 by cutting up a couple JK tops and sectioned them together. Make sure the body shop that paints it uses a compatible filler and primer prior to paint. The body shop that painted mine sanded through the filler I used and touched it up with an incompatible material. There were a few small spots where the paint bubbled. SEM makes products that will work for your situation.

True, to an extent. Sheet molding compound (SMC) actually IS fiberglass-based... in fact, it's made of several materials including fiberglass, polymer resin, release agents and thickeners. But you're right, it can't be repaired like fiberglass (mostly due to differences in expansion/contraction with heat, as I understand it). And from what I've read, it should only be repaired using epoxy-based resins, fillers and adhesives.

Anyway, there's a really good primer on it here... I didn't know this, but Corvettes used SMC panels from 1973-2004 (and even until this day, with the exception of carbon-fiber parts): https://www.ensignautobody.com/car-talk/2016/12/30/fiberglass-smc-carbon-fiber-and-beyond

BTW, I just scratched my own hardtop, so this was top-of-mind for me... best of luck!

you have me rethinking the hothead headliners. That looks nice and I wouldn't have even thought of linex on the roof much less on the inside. What to do what to do
Before I spend money on the hothead headliners, would adding line-x to the hard top accomplish the same goal?

That is what I am now debating. I would figure this would at a bare minimum reduce noise as much as the sound assassin strips (not that the gladiator is noisey by any means). I figure price point would be similar and the picture he showed makes the inside look rather "finished"with the line x. So now I am in debate mode.

Reduced wind noise in my experience. I have no idea if there is any added R value but I see no reason why hothead liners could not be paired with it

Any new info on your top? The more I think of it the more I want it for a camper top build I have in mind.
I have not done anything yet, as my dealership says new white tops are not available for sale yet.

I ordered my hydro blue with the black hard top since the color matched wasn’t available yet. I didn’t go for the Insulation since the hotheads were cheaper, but if the line-x has some insulation quality, I’d be really interested. I’d also consider the blue line-x, even if it doesn’t color match exactly, I think it might look good in the bed/hardtop

I was backing into a spot and did not see that a metal spiral staircase was about to smash my roof. Any thoughts on how to proceed to get it repaired?

That’ll buff out :giggle:

Seriously it could have been much worse and far more costly to repair

You line-x the hard top? I have heard about line-x for truck beds but not hard tops. Can you explain please?
The Line-x where I live has a pop can with Line-x applied to entire aluminum can. No one can even crush the can, very durable.

That hardtop is likely unfixable because the damage is in the seam. File a claim.

This is exactly why I’ve always bought the black hardtop and always had it line-x’d. I flopped my LJ completely onto its side on the rubicon trail 6 years ago and only broke 1 window. The line-x saved my top and also my flares
You linexed your flares too? Not a scratch, or? Pics?

This sucks, I feel your pain. This is the exact reason my wife doesn’t drive my JT. She’s backed into more stuff since we’ve had back up cameras compared to when we didn’t.
