Trying to make lemonade here... I’ve got an Overland and wish I had some of the features in the Rubicon like lockers (rear at least) and a 4.10 gear (or maybe 4.56 for that matter).

I’ve already gone through the online recall site and am affected. Apparently there’s the option for reimbursement instead of having the dealer repair for free. Does anyone with past recall experience know if I can use this issue as an opportunity to offset the costs of an upgrade...even if it’s just the labor portion?
Interesting to hear that a safety issue would be “paid off.” I mean it’s your Jeep, so I agree do what you want. Surprised that it’s an option is all.

I like the idea as @WXman said to replace with an upgraded aftermarket one and be (partially) reimbursed. Better design an a fraction of the cost. Win win.

@spazzyfry123 and @WXman. Are there any aftermarket drive shafts currently being manufactured for the JT?

Typically companies like Tom Wood and J.E. Reel have you send them detailed measurements and they custom build the shaft to fit your Jeep.

You have to pay to fix the issue and they will reimburse you for that cost not the cost of the vehicle to upgrade to another... that is called buyback and very rare in the industry...

Gotcha, I should have phrased it better... I meant I want to upgrade a few components that may share some of the labor with the labor required to replace the drive shaft. So, in theory, I’m wondering if I can save 1-2 hours of labor by having a non-FCA mechanic replace the driveshaft and install a new diff w/lockers at the same time.

Changing the drive shaft is a 15 minute job.

FCA isn't stupid.

NO LEMONADE FOR YOU!

After looking at clearances under the truck a little closer, I think it might be tough to do a 1-piece shaft. The fuel tank is very close to the front half of the shaft, which is probably why they used that pencil-sized front section.

So let me get this straight, dealer said there is nothing they can do. So they can't inspect the driveshaft and just grease it either way as a preventative measure?

They can't do anything but they aren't saying don't drive the vehicle and to park it and come get a loaner car like BMW did when they has the hvac system wire causing fires and no remedy yet so park it and come get loaner?

Keep driving it and just want to warn you to be prepared for a possible failure and accident.

This is the strangest recall I have ever experienced.

According to the mopar site mine is part of the recall...10,300 miles and no issues so far, including multiple trips towing my airstream.

Don't get too excited, dealerships can only order 1 shaft per 7 days and is VIN specific. So, have them order and take delivery of the new shaft before going to the stealership.

Went to the dealer today and got scheduled to have the driveshaft checked, as my LE is on the list. We shall see what happens.
