... it seems the AL6 transmission in the JL and JT does use shifter cables, I assume to move the shifter forward towards the dash. That's an odd choice in my opinion, it's not that difficult to move the shifter on the transmission and many manual transmissions have multiple shifter locations on the case.
I agree and was surprised when I read about it but I hadn’t verified and was hoping I had read wrong. Such an odd choice, I don’t really get it.

I’d like to think that since the cable run is short it won’t really be an issue, and the one 2018 JL I’ve driven other than being very notchy ( this may have been an anomaly as I haven’t found any other mention of it) didn’t feel like a cable shift setup. I guess one minimal bonus is the shifter won’t bounce around with the transmission.

It’s not stopping me from considering a JT/JL, things like the length, price, the steering problems are a lot higher on my list. Consider it’s possible to find a 4x4 M/T frontier in the mid 20k range, brand new, 4 door, 5’ bed, V6 and it’s a whole foot shorter than the JT. Back when they offered it in S trim (base) I actually found a brand new one for 21.5k. I know it’s ancient and the interior is... beyond ugly but it’s not a bad truck. Of the three MT options it seems to actually drive the best, having a more natural connected feel making it easier to drive smoothly. And the motor has some low end grunt too.

This is unrelated to your topic, but could you send a photo of your trail cam view. Curious how much the bull bar interferes with the view..
I'm not a stay on topic Nazi. We're meandering around all things manual transmission. I'll be working on cowl lights in a bit, I'll get you a pic.

I despise shifter cables and their typically mushy bushings and just the whole "disconnected" feel. I've dealt with that enough with FWD vehicles in my life and do not want that in a Jeep that I would be taking off road.
I thought it was shift by wire, just from knowing how my '90 NA Miata feels vs my 2008 VW beetle; and from driving a Tacoma right before. The I think the taco is still shift by wire but it felt more notchy and had shorter throws. Either way I'm just over 1000kms/600 miles on my gladiator and I'm more tuned in to it, I can shift it better, and the stick just feels how it feels... *Cough-likeAvideoGameController, *Cough-forAtractorOnFarmSimulator.

Just kidding, it's not that bad... It just feels like every other shift by wire car except it's a long stick, long throws, makes it feel like a stick for a video game tractor

On a long 3hr highway drive to Boston yesterday, it needs shifting between 5th and 6th often

only thing I still have a hard time telling is if I am lugging the engine, because it's quiet.

So I learned something this weekend. In 4L yer manual transmission becomes an automatic transmission. You let off the clutch and it crawls without any input from the driver. It was amazing and made getting over and around obstacles so easy.

Thats awesome to know its low enough to keep from being dependent on clutch disengagement to keep from bogging out over obstacles. Even in 4LOW my CJ5 gives my left leg a work out on obstacles, especially in an incline. Probably has alot to do with stock gears and 34's. Are you running stock tires?

I don't know if the JT has it.... but in my TJ there was a fuse you could pull that would override the clutch-to-start and when you were mid trail you would just crank it up and go. No clutch pedal. Made it nice for a tough climb or obstacle where you just wanted to crank it up and start climbing and not have to worry about rolling back.

Yeah completely stock everything. It was really great to see just how capable it was.

was that with the selec speed control activated? I know if equipped you can only activate it when in 4LOW and you use the auto trans shifter in manual mode to to select your crawl speed with (+) or (-). (im not sure if its even offered in a manual transmission). i

That does not exist in my manual. I don't see that option or button anywhere.

cool, i had a feeling that was a Auto only feature. It basically allows the auto to perform like a manual in 4LOW, making it throttle up to engage the torque converter for crawling, much like the effects of direct drive on a manual when releasing the cluthc. I just didnt know if it was still an option as it could still operate braking when descending. (another advantage of manual) let the engine slow you down. Thanks

So I figure I would ask this here and get yalls input. Since my JT is nothing like driving a manual car I'm still learning all the nuances my JT likes. Anyone notice a "crunch" sound as soon as you press in the clutch when shifting from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd? I notice this happens more frequently when I completely letting off the gas right before shifting to 2nd and 3rd. However, I don't hear this "crunch" sound when I actually give it a tiny gas to increase the rpm by 200 or 300 right before I press the clutch and shift. By doing so it drives and shifts much smoother. Do yall think I have an issue with my clutch and masking the issue by doing this workaround I found or is this how you're supposed to drive a manual JT?

i came across this in a title of another thread on this forum. Common verdict was it became less noticeable after about 2k miles.
