Okay Fisherman, How are YOU transporting your rods?

To be honest, didn't think about this when I bought in early March.

I have 7' single piece rods, how are you that fish SAFELY and SECURELY transporting your gear with this short bed? If and when I get the Upper Deck from A.C.E. I have a few ways I can get it done, but right now I'm drawing a blank.

I use 1-piece rods for bass fishing, as well. Since I sold my bass boat last year, I now have to put the rods inside the truck to meet whoever I'm fishing with. I open the front passenger door, and push them up through the passenger seat area across the center console, and into the back seat are, and put the rod butts in the passenger floorboard with the rod tips up the air at a diagonal towards the driver's side rear seat.

Safest way to transport without damage or theft.

I have the same challenge too. If I'm using my rod bag (rods with reels attached) I do it similar to what @Alabama Mud Machine does. Only that I slide the bag in (butt end first) from the rear door on the driver side

If I'm just transporting a few rods only I tried to stick them behind the TuxMat on the passenger side (see pic attached). Got a 7'2" there pointing towards the rear sliding window. Still have a few inches left.

I did thought about leaving the tailgate down halfway through (bed cover closed), but of course it's not secure storage.

I see alot of people here with large rod tubes made from pvc mounted on bed racks. Seems like the best way with the only downside being the need for a rack. Seems popular with the kayak fishing guys.

I have a one piece custom 9', 10W fly rod and this is what I came up with for now. I will be fabbing a 4 rod holder like one of these retail ones

Yeah......Ummm..... No. I use Kistler Custom rods and out of production top-tier Shimano reels... Do what you want, but there's no way in hell I'm trusting something like that with my rigs.

I'm pretty sure neither the hood nor the roof is of a ferrous metal. So, that ain't going to work on a Jeep.

Snowboard racks are undoubtedly the best option for carrying fishing rods, period. I’ve used both the THULE and Yakima ones for years, they lock (yes technically someone could steal the reels but wouldn’t be easy), the rubber guards holds the rod in place with no rubbing (this his is key for not damaging rods) and can hold several rods especially the wide versions.

mount anywhere you would mount the snowboard racks... roof rack, hardtop, bed rails, bed covers (I’ve seen some mounted to the soft roll covers on the brace rails) and Other improve mods in the bed.

Thats how I transport mine in my current Dodge Ram. Safer that way. Have had to many rods get damaged and end up breaking due to banging around in the bed of the truck or getting crushed back there

I was going to say snowboard racks, or they make basically small snowboard style racks for rods.

I do the same in all my vehicles...Even when I’d drive my 2017 Mustang GT to my brother’s house up in T-Town (about 3 hour drive). My rods cost to much to replace from my own stupidity, and my reels haven’t been made since around 2011...So they’re pretty hard to find in the condition mine are in.

Yep I have a few custom rods and folks don't realize that just a simple nick or slash on them or such can cause them to break while under fish fighting conditions.

Yup that's exactly why I never transport my core setups outside a locked car cabin without proper protection.

Theft and vandalism are other issues which I believe some (if not many) of us are also concerned about. Personally i put my gears in bags or covered 95% of the time, even when stored inside the vehicle. Just so they won't attract unwanted attention.

So I'm with the OP as I went through the same challenge after getting the JT. I have also looked into larger lockable cases to be mounted and secured in the bed (e.g. trail rails + cable locks to bed anchors). Maybe let it stick out with the tailgate halfway down. Though I still don't feel comfortable doing so. Hopefully someone else will chime in with other workable ideas. : )

Once my bedrack finally comes in I'm throwing a rod vault on top. I'm in Denver so they show up used all the time. Fits up to an 11 ft fly rod and they make them in 7ft for standard tackle.
