Synthetic oil

Just wanted to know if anyone out there is using synthetic oil after a break-in period and what are your thoughts about synthetic oil ?

Everyone loves oil threads. It is my understanding that factory oil is synthetic. Regardless, synthetic oil isn’t some mystery. Use it if you want, most important is to use an oil with the appropriate rating and change the oil and filter on the schedule based on your use.

I use amsoil in all my vehicles. Not because I think it’s the best oil but because they have 1-2 day delivery.

The 0W-20 oil spec’d for our truck and used as the factory fill is synthetic.

Ignore all the BS out there about synthetic. It's not dangerous, it's as good as anything else if you get a good brand. It won't cause leaks, it won't cause wear, it won't void any warranty, it can safely by mixed with "dino oil" if you run low and can't find synthetic right away. It's been used in cars made here and elsewhere for years as factory oil.
And the "break-in" oil is just oil, too - it's still called break-in oil simply because it's put in there during initial break-in but it's also not magic and not different.
The stuff out there about oil is over 3/4 bs these days - and people like to hang on to the old wives' tales or "I have a cousin who knew a guy who...." stories.
Use a good oil and move on - synthetic is just fine.
I build high performance engines and have built auto and truck engines since the 1970s - I've never lost one and never had one that didn't go either until I traded, sold and over 100,000 miles, whichever came first. My SX4 engine went 160,000 miles.

I think it’s weird to see Quaker State products at the top of any oil list. My mind goes back to the old “sludge” stuff they made in the ‘80s...

I've used it with zero issues. Of course I changed oil and filter every 2,000 miles and more often if it was short drives. Most of the issue was short drives, cars sitting, idling for long periods, etc.
My parents used it in all of their cars for as long as I recall.
Prior to QS I used Blue Velvet, then switched to Havoline when I worked at the first shop I was in after college, then went to QS and ran that until the last decade.

I've never seen any issues with it over my years as a mechanic or vehicle owner. But I've not seen every car that ever had oil in it either!

This engine for years was spec'd with 5W30 which almost certainly was better for reducing wear, but the 0W20 is a lower friction viscosity so they like using it for their own benefit, not the benefit of the consumer.

Virtually any engine that calls for 5W20, can also safely use 5W30. In fact, many engines that call for 5W20 are happier, and make less mechanical noise with 5W30.

5W30 is really the optimum motor oil viscosity overall, for most water-cooled gasoline engines, including High HP engines. Any viscosity thinner than 5W30, is thinner than optimum. And any viscosity thicker than 5W30 is thicker than optimum.

I run 5w30. Anything thicker usually, not always, but on a tight engine leads to the oil being hotter and less lube in cold starts. It's the FILM that prevents wear, not the pressure or viscosity. The "thickness" simply allows it to move more or less freely and higher viscosity means it's generating more friction just within itself.
The light oils used today are generally for CAFE numbers - not for the greatness of the engine.

I used Rotella Gas Truck 0w-20 the first 2 oil changes in my Jeep . The engine seems to like it well enough

Oil is oil pretty much these days. My JKU called for 5w20 but I ran 10w30 in it because it had a slight oil leak when I ran 5w20 and it slowed the leak with the 10W30, I just changed it out every 3000 miles like I was supposed to. I also used Supertech 10W30 in it which is Walmart Brand oil and it always seemed to like it. Put 132,000 miles on it in 7yrs of ownership and probably 95,000 miles of those 132,000 were with Walmart 10W30 Supertech oil. I'll probably run it in my JT as well after I get past my 10 free oil changes if they have it in 0w20.

Anyway...I use Amsoil Signature Series in all my vehicles, every 10K, and have since the first oil changes.
