Aren't we all here with a common passion for Jeeps? Can't we just help each other without being nasty or judgmental? One of my favorite parts of having a Jeep is the community culture. Sometimes questions asked could be answered with a quick search or reading the manual but many of us are happy to provide our experience or answers without the attitude. We have enough nastiness we all deal with in the world lets be friendly to our fellow jeepers.
I did see what it does -based on "the book" but when people ask about it, I still pop in to see what others who have USED IT have to say - details, when to or NOT to use it, exactly how it works or what it doesn't do, etc. No book can do that. So even though I knew the basic function - according to the book, I really wanted to see what people who have used it in the real world had to add.
If no one asked, then I'd never learn more about it. And some - thanks to some comments - are afraid to ask or shy about it for fear of being blasted for asking a question.
There aren't dumb questions, sure are a lot of dumb answers........
The only bad question is one unasked.

I learned more about that button from this forum than that book could have ever told me and unless I waited for the crops to be out and went and asked my neighbors - hey, can I drive through your fields - I'd not have been able to try it myself.

Even better, I learned it's the duck button!

Seems like I am living a similar work path as you. I've always been a Auto technician (now part time at a high performance turbo shop) but currently work full time in IT for the federal government.

I came to this forum to learn more about my truck, things I might have missed in the owners manual, and also to provide help when I can.

I honestly never even tried that crawl control button until recently (didn't know it existed lol) Had the truck since May.
I started in my mid-teens being a mechanic, went to college, had my own businesses, etc. it's always been my first real love as far as working life. I enjoyed the IT parts, too - it allowed creativity and logic. As I look back - I can't see any of it not having been a help of some sort at some point.
It seems to me that there's a number of us who have had the dual automotive/IT path.

Really? You haven't seen how many other Jeep people have asked about this very button - and other things about the JT?

It's what this forum (and others) are all about - answering questions.
OK, but how many times, how many threads does a forum need ON THE SAME SUBJECT?

Besides people not RTFM they don't bother to search; instead they say, "hey, I've got an idea, I'll start a thread asking my question."

Multiple threads on the same subject don't add any value to any forum

Thanks to @Gvsukids for trying to put an early end to this thread. Watch - this one will go on for 15 pages

The feature is an amazing response to the Tacoma TRD's similar system, which is GREAT. With limited articulation and only a rear locker, it's one of the reason Taco's do so well offroad. You have to be patient, it's very different to managing the clutch and brakes like old farts are used to, but it's a great feature whether Toyota or Jeep.

It was one of the things emphasized by the Jamboree instructors at the Adventure Academy, my wife was so pleased she knew about it already (and the weird loud sounds) because she was ALONE in that in our group! In the Rubicon, each gear is a .6 MPH increment, it's obviously higher with the standard transfer case gearing. My wife also picked a perfect line down a STEEP drop that was intended to give people experience in having a tire lift - kind of a trust/experience exercise to get people recalibrated. Her line didn't lift an axle, again alone in our group.

Jeep obviously knows no-one is familiar with the system, even the Silicon Valley techies with their shiny new Rubicons, so the fact they emphasized it so much gives an idea how useful it is (and how badly salespeople explain features).

Searches don't always work especially if key words won't match.
Asking "what's this button do" - how do you search for something specific? Look for "button" or "what's this do" ?
And if you knew the key words to look for then you already know what it's for.
This is one of those things that unspecific.
HVAC or AC or heater - SIMPLE.
Tire pressure - simple.
Check engine light - simple
But if you wonder what a specific button does - what words do you use?
You can't do a picture search - show me results that have this picture in it- there's no words on the button to ask about. It doesn't say "cruise" or "speed control" - it looks like a duck from 10 feet away.

And since the search results show perhaps 12 results all from the same thread on one page - do you look at every one of those posts only to find - it's not related, then go on to page 2 of the results - and still find nothing? Or do you ask in a way that makes sense to YOU?
Yes, showing links that end up answering the question is ideal but people are people and every one of xx billion on this planet are different in how they think, speak, ask, answer and more. Even twins aren't always alike.

But here we are back at blasting a person for asking a question - soon everyone will be afraid to ask and the forum will die.
I've seen it - two AMC related forums died because the hard core guys intimidated everyone. the one Ian and I started is still alive almost 15 years later.

Sales people often don't know what they are selling. I asked a sales guy once "what's with the wires to this mirror" on a 90 Camaro we were looking at. It was the first time I'd seen such a fancy inside mirror. The guy was clueless. I asked a couple of other questions that I did know the answer to just to check him out - clueless. When I was shopping gladiators, I asked about a couple of easy things - should have been easy to them - clueless. Only one guy could answer every single question I had, including the exact measurements of the inside of the box, how the Aux switches worked, where the wiring was for them and more.

It’s for rock crawling...I used it yesterday at Rausch Creek Off-road park..and its fecking awesome.

Uses the brakes to control crawl speeds that are set in increments using the manual mode + and -

Its a very low torque gear as well...so you climb up controled...and don’t drop hard...it controls coming off rocks too.

Warning: It makes a helluva racket as its doing its thing.
I used it the other day going down a steep, rocky decline. It was awesome. Took all control away from my leg.

It is a little odd to get used to it. Noisy and feels like you aren’t controlling the truck over obstacles. But it can be useful on a steep decline that is rocky and you want to make sure you maintain a very slow crawl. Best description is cruise control for rock crawling. I have tried it a few times and don’t really like it but I can see how it could be useful for a few situations.
I, also do not like it. Something about all the noise sounding like lotsa grinding. Idk, old guy resisting new technology

Worst part about the Jl/ JT platform is all the annoying first timers and image buy ins....

Literally if you dont know what that button is or never smoked a set of brakepads coming down inclines on a decent improperly , you will probably never use the button...

If it wasn't for first-timers your precious brand would DIE. Attrition.

Wow buy a truck for 60k and not even know how it works , NICE.
LOL, I never understand this either. The manual is worth reading twice. Once just sitting around in the house, second time through I did most of it in the Jeep so I could test things. Like this offroad cruise, and learn how it works and when to use it.

My house was 300k and there are still some light switches that I don’t know what they do haha
Yeah, so I've been meaning to ask you. That third switch from the right? Knock it the hell off. That one controls the light in my fridge. Stop messing with it.
