Some have suggested to keep an extra key in a faraday bag hidden inside the vehicle. That way, you can always get yourself home if you find yourself with the key. They run around $15. Of course the Jeep key fob may require a tablet bag, lol.

Well, you'd also have to have the Sirius remote access service, so you can unlock the vehicle to get to the key...

Yea that is a good thing to remember. So pretty much keep the spare hidden in a faraday bag and learn how to use the Sirius remote access and you will be in good shape. I do lots of water and outdoor activities (fishing, boating, hiking, hunting, and running at parks) where I could easily loose the keys. I've seen the hitch key lock and thought about buying it instead of hiding my key (what i do now).

I have a friend that started his motorcycle in his garage and drove off to work. He stoped at the gas station shut the bike off and filled up. When he went to restart the bike he realized that he did not have the key as he left in hanging in the garage. His wife had to bring him the key.

After hearing his story I try to always double check that I do indeed have my key with me.
I have to laugh about keys, I had two old /2 BMW's, their key fit all /2's, it was just a nail with a groove that would hold it in place, all it did was push down on a contact and if you didn't have a key, any nail would do, just had to watch it bouncing out.

I don't think this was mentioned yet, but isn't the reason it needs to keep running if the fob is removed for when the fob battery dies while you're driving?

No, the battery in the FOB has no direct link to the operation of the truck. It affects convenience features, but not the ability to start and drive.

The fob has to have the battery to be detected by the proximity start system.

That's a very interesting point. If the battery dies, you can start the vehicle with the secondary chip in the fob, and the vehicle has no way to know if that's in it or not. It only activates when you press it into the start button. Maybe that's why the park doesn't lock either. You may have just explained the whole thing.

Correct- to be detected, but it doesn’t need a battery to stay running, or to start the vehicle. If there is no battery in the fob, you just push the start button with the fob itself. Once running, you’ll get a random key fob not detected message.

And that's exactly why the vehicle can't be shut off or locked into park if the key is out of it (or battery dies).

No, it’s a purpose designed feature to have a compromise between an owner and a thief since the RF Hub can’t make that distinction. It is to give the owner a chance to turn around and retrieve a somehow forgotten fob, and at the same time, if someone steals the vehicle while you leave it running with the fob on you, they can only drive it until they shut it off.
The fob being able to start the vehicle without a battery in it is designed that way for obvious reasons- so you don’t have to rely on a battery that could die at any given time to start the vehicle.

Yeah, that's exactly what I said with more words.

Just checked the BMW, and it does the same thing. Key in, start, remove key. You can still shift it all you want and drive it.

My Nissan behaves the same way. It also lets you push the FOB against the Start button to drive it when the FOB battery is dead. It's a 2013 model.

Our BMW is a 2011 Z4 35is, so age doesn't seem to be a factor, nor country of origin. Interestingly, neither vehicle will let you use the outside touch/button lock if the key isn't close by. Putting the key on a table just 10' away prevents you from being able to use the exterior lock feature. The BMW knows if the key is inside the trunk, and won't latch the trunk.
