With 37’s I am really interested in spare tire solutions. I am looking hard at several options.

if you have a bed mounted spare or have seen a cool solution, post pics or links!

secondly, i have seen this one advertised a few times. No drilling, mounts above the bed floor, seems easy to convert back for big cargo, which is a plus. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

I dig the AEV one- it’s vertical so you have more bed space.

drawback is you lose visibility out the back window.

I thought about trying to do that in the back of my cargo rack with some kinda y tire tie down but idk if the extra weight will support it. The cargo rack says supports 125lbs but I'll probably have more weight on it with extras.

I have the Wilco and it's not great. Frankly, it's garbage for the price.

edit
wrote a bunch but it was a rant... just know that the mounting isn't great, there's a ton of leverage on the rail that results in a lot of bouncing, and I'm afraid of the long-term impact on the rail system without the hacky solution I have planned to secure the tire better.
/edit

AEV has the right idea but it's heavy AF. I think someone could fab their own and do a much better job because a lot of the weight has to do with being stable at several different heights.

This one doesn't take up as much of the bed.

I thought about having one custom made but the challenge there is recovering bed space. The one above looks cool but basically puts tire on display probably above functionality goals.

dv8 makes one that pivots, but its costly. One of these ideas will have to work though. I even thought about just tying the tire down with straps in the bed with anchor points.

That's the Wilco one I mentioned earlier and I'd take a hard pass if you off road or like anything resembling a positive offset. Fine for street use and if you have a fairly negative offset (less leverage on the threaded rod) but it's not very secure otherwise. Way too much leverage on the trail rail.

No matter what, a 35/37 is going to create a lot of dead space - it's just a question of what part you want to sacrifice. I have found up by the cab on driver side is the best because a fair chunk of the tire hangs over the wheelwell. It's angled on the driver side more than the passenger so you can really shove it over there.

All you really need is a retention system. The tire isn't being supported by the carrier like with a JL so if you can prevent the tire from twisting, tipping, and bouncing, you're good to go. I think a strap system is going to be the best (lightest) solution... all you'd need is something to make three points of contact on the rear you can lash against and the weight itself can just rest on the bed floor.

Thinking of going with the DV8 version, bolt in and you can lift it for more bed space.

Has me thinking why not put crossbars in and mount it to the crossbars? Preserves space!!! I had to carry a couple in my cargo basket the other day. A single 37 would fit nice there sitting above the bed. With the rear camera visibility is not really relevant

Have a friend that did this with a full-height rack so it's cab-height down the road but still comes downward so you're not lifting an 80lb tire/wheel. IMO the perfect design because it keeps the bed clear, no weight off the back, and worst case of a flat with a full bed, it wasn't hard to climb up and pull it down.

My shop was talking about doing a fab fours or similar rack and relocating the stock spare winch system up to the cross bars to lift it underneath the upper cross bars.

i think i would like to keep it real simple so if i have to go get mulch or other honey do stuff locally it wouldnt be a big deal to remove the spare and get bed space back.

anyone use rugged ridge gear? Their carrier looks simple so long as it stayed sturdy. The bolt together setup is kindof a concern for the weight of a 37.

My cross bars are just over the bed. Loading the tires was a bit of a pain but unloading I used gravity and you wouldn't move them much. Could use the space of the spare for a fuel tank or something. I'll need to see if I can find a nice cross bad mounted tire carrier that looks cleaner than strapping the tire to the cargo basket
