A dealer from out of state is sending a rep to buy my audi. I own it free and clear and have the title. Dealer said that rather than sign the title, they want me to sign a limited power of atty to them. Seems legit and all but I am having a mental block on what I have done in the past on trade ins. Is this the right way to do it or am I going to end up on Dateline

Sound like it is there way of avoiding taxes and having another name on the title. If they brought me cash I would probably do it.

Its a legit, long standing new car dealer. They are bringing me a check. If it was Bob's used cars I might be a little more concerned ha

The power of attorney lets them take the unsigned title and sign it themselves. This prevents any mistakes.

Insurance companies will often do this, too; especially if there is a lien.

Some states require that you report a sold vehicle. Make sure you report to your DMV that it sold.

Remember to remove it from your insurance after you execute bill of sale.

you don’t want the liability if the dude they sent gets in to a wreck!

^^^^^^^^^ THIS!!!

Dealers don't always report vehicle transfers. If a vehicle you traded/sold goes out of state and gets registered your state may not get notified.
If a VIN comes back in your name still, you'll have headaches proving you weren't driving the vehicle in Timbuctoo and creating a new drive thru lane at the adult bookstore, even if you have ALL the right paperwork on hand.

Make sure you get a completed bill of sale, preferably one with their corporate name and the signature of purchasing agent.

Yeah, common practice. It’s a real PITA when there is a miscommunication and someone signs the title.

20 years in the auto title biz here and it’s common for dealers to wanted a POA in case they botch an assignment and need to order a duplicate etc

Yup it’s pretty normal. Anytime I have traded a vehicle I have had to do this.

Wow...didn't know that was a thing. Every time I've traded in a vehicle, I just signed the title over when the transaction occured. I would be pretty sketched out signing a POA with a dealer or anyone else for that matter and might even consider telling them to take a hike. Seems like a lot of folks are ok with it. Just make sure it is a Limited Power of Attorney not a general and specifically details what they can and can't do with the LPOA.

They’re most always state specific and VIN exclusive so you don’t have to worry about people going to the hospital, putting you on a DNR order and collecting life insurance on you. Lol
