New JT Gladiator Steering Issue TSB 08-074-20 (for "Improved Steering Feel")

Mine is the same as yours, stock Mojave on 35’s. Did it with the stock AT’s. Constantly having to put input to keep it straight at any speed. Feel like I’m flying an old Cessna.

A rudder would do wonders for this.

Mine just went back to get its steering gear parts changed out for the new parts. As mine didnt seem that bad, hop its only the same or better when I get it back! Wish me luck. I will update when I get it and drive it.

Just drove it home. Honestly, it doesnt feel much different, if anything now it feels a hair more loose, BUT that could just be me in my head. i do think i need to adjust my drag link a hair. It was off a hair before i took it, but feels like it could be a hair more off now. Again, could all be my head.

So i just went for another drive. The steering does feel tighter now, but I feel like im having to work more now to drive it than before. I also feel like I now have to hold the steering wheel to the left about 5-10% to get it to drive straight. Im not sure i like the new one as much as the old one honestly.
Looking at my papers, i cant tell what all exactly they did, if they did alignment, software etc. It only says they changed the steering gear stuff. No much description honestly.

As of right now, i miss the old gear more.

That is kind of mind blowing that the steering box itself caused a pull. I guess that is possible if there was some bizarre valving issue. Wish we could sit in on the manufactures morning meetings!

Not at all odd if you look at how power steering sectors work internally. Yes, it's likely a valving issue - internal leakage, whatever. Interesting to note that the EHPS needs to be reprogrammed for the steering gear change, that tells me it's more than just a simple old-fashioned system, unless they are simply changing the pump pressures with the programming.

something about it just doesn’t feel great anymore. I went for another drive down the road and interstate a second ago. I have to have a constant pull on my steering wheel to stay straight. Leaving the steering wheel pointed a little left. If I let it go the truck wants to drift right. I don’t remember ever having to have a constant left hold to keep the truck going straight before today’s box change.

Good luck. I’m on box #7. FCA does not give any Fk’s about their horrendous unethical manufacturing processes. They will never fix the boxes because it will hurt their bottom dollar.

And yes, part of the internal problem is the valving. I have proof of this.

7 wow. I don’t plan to swap this one out. It seems ok for the most part if I can figure what the issue is making it feel a little off with the stuff described above. There’s no wander really. Just that pull / steering wheel thing. It has to be somewhere else. Alignment. Drag link? Tires? Who knows

Mine started pulling right after the new box. I am on the second one and it seems ok but need to drive it a few more miles before I can be sure.

Like I said before - second new steering gear resolved the wandering totally. No pull either way, no play in the wheel, wheel centered. It just plain works like any other truck of this size. It was a dream on Pike's Peak. I couldn't be happier with the way mine steers now. The first new steering gear was mostly ok at first but got worse with time - the wander increased, play increased, it was fatiguing driving it much on the highway. Not any more, even in the wind or with a big semi passing me.

I went back to the dealership this morning. He said they should have centered the steering wheel at least but when I said my complaints they are gonna get me in on Tuesday morning to check out the pull and get me on the alignment rack. I’m hoping that addresses my concern.

Had an interesting 4th of July. We just returned from a 2,000 mile road trip. Steered great the whole time. We had the TSB steering box changed in February. Yesterday, we headed out on I-5 to Tacoma and the Electronic Stability Control light came on and the steering got really sloppy. Turned around and nursed it home. With wife's help I checked the steering and found improper movement of the pitman arm. Checked the nut - lightly finger tight! Removed it and checked - no evidence of lock-tite! Put the nut back on finger tight and had it towed to the dealer who installed the steering box. They said it will be fixed. Shop supervisor in overwatch on the job.

If you had the TSB steering box done, paint pen mark the nut and shaft! Check it every 1,000 miles. Led me to check my JL too. No problems there. A bit scary - that is the "Meet your Maker" nut!!

Just joking. The idea was get good and drunk then sober up and see if it feels any different. But this is a safety issue for sure and it seems like its exceeding your dealers diagnostic abilities.

Have you already seen if the jeepcares folks can lend a hand?
