Hey friends,

Looking at the available trucks for sale in my area - some have the packages I want others don’t.
So my big question is:
which packages do I want to make sure I have in the truck I get and what packages are easier to install later?

• spray in bed liner
• uconnect 4c nav - alpine audio system
• hard top headliner
• Jeep active safety group
• trail rail management system
• adaptive cruise control/fwd collision warning
• aux switch group
• max tow package - haven’t seen this on any of the available cars - pls tell me I can get it installed later??
• also if I want to pull a small trailer will I need the 4.10 axle ratio ? Or is that for big tows?

Thanks a million guys!! Still so green but willing to learn if y’all will teach me!!

What do you want in a truck? You have to decide what is absolutely required in your vehicle.

bedliners, headliners, trail rail are all "easy" after purchase add-ons; some options are better than OEM.

Max Tow is only available on the Sport/Sport S (iirc).

If you're not getting that model, get the basic Tow Package, as it has extra cooling capacity. This will be useful in non-towing situations.

HI, here is what I ordered on my Majave:
Max Tow.. to much more included and you cannot get all later in A/M. 4.10 is good for any towing.
This is part of the Customer preferred group 24D...Aux Switch Group - some A/M does similar but is not IMO as good as the Factory.
I did not upgrade - the audio system (could do A/M later if I choose). No trail rail, do not see adaptive cruise/ I do not think you could add later.. the Hardtop headliners .. can do later several A/M available (same as a JL).

  • Bedliner is easily done afterwards at equivalent or lower cost. Different colors, too.
  • The Alpine audio system and 8.4 display are REALLY nice and I'd not spend the aftermarket $$$ for that. The 10" Stinger is a head unit only and is $1000, add speakers and a subwoofer $$$$.
  • Headliner aftermarket options are generally below sticker, Hotheads is a great brand but it is make-work to install. Hotheads has sound deadening options too.
  • We really like the traffic warning / cross traffic, saved my a$$ in a parking lot already once.
  • I added the OEM trail rail system at a discount, I didn't like the plastic lock box so I put a metal JCR in. Useful for cargo control & tonneau mounting points (added Mopar tri-fold soft tonneau for wife's preferences).
  • Adaptive cruise control - didn't get/didn't want, I've used it in other cars, not my cup of tea.
  • I went with a VOS switch 6 relay unit, if you think you'll use it the factory system is nice and has four relays.
  • Max Tow is Sport/Sport S only and is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade that cannot be matched after the fact. The Rubicon and Mojave have the equivalent to Max Tow abilities, with lower limits due to suspension tuning. If you plan to tow, and I mean tow anything, I strongly recommend doing it right from the beggining. The 4.10 ratio is part of it, the limited slip diff in the rear is another, and wider axles for greater stability is the last bit. The receiver hitch is serious, and the cooling is too, but you will need a brake controller for larger trailers.

Things to consider:
  • Cold weather package! We live where it BARELY freezes in Winter but my wife loves the heated steering wheel and seats.
  • Hardtop - I much prefer a hardtop for a Jeep, or a sunshade when it's nice out/top off.
  • Automatic - the 8 spd auto is excellent and you can only get a Max Tow with the 8 spd. The manual is severely limited for towing capacity.
  • The Rubicon and Mojave packages are very different to each other, if you don't need the Max Tow capability the automatic versions are good tow vehicles. I'd test drive all three, if I didn't live at the foot of the Sierras the Mojave would be VERY tempting over the Rubicon!
  • See tonneau ref above, makes my wife feel better about cargo in the back.
  • Keyless entry is SO convenient.
Have fun on your hunt!

I forgot one, a leather interior. I didn't want it, have had leather in vehicles before and didn't think I liked it. Leather and the cold weather package were the "eh, it's close enough" items when I found what I wanted. I was wrong, leather is easier to keep clean.

Little dogs or big dogs, doesn't matter, I can vacuum my wife's Honda for an hour and not get one Dachshund's hair out of there. A LEAF BLOWER works on the Jeep!

Keep towels handy for the front seats though, in the Summer they get hot with the top off. Totally worth it.

This is all I know but I'm almost as far from an expert as you are.

• spray in bed liner <-- easy aftermarket
• uconnect 4c nav - alpine audio system <-- If you want it, do it from the factory unless you are someone who wants custom head unit/sound down the road but I suspect you wouldn't be asking if you were.
• hard top headliner <-- My understanding is hothead liners are better than factory and easy enough to install.
• Jeep active safety group <-- I think you can add later but much easier to just get it from the factory. blind spot monitor alone is probably worth it.
• trail rail management system <-- outlet in the bed is the only thing you get with the factory setup that you can't easily add later
• adaptive cruise control/fwd collision warning <-- Can't add later without significant effort and cost. If you want it get it from the factory
• aux switch group <-- can add later
• max tow package - haven’t seen this on any of the available cars - pls tell me I can get it installed later <-- You can install all the parts aftermarket but better off getting it from the factory. Not available on most trim levels which is why you might not be seeing it.
• also if I want to pull a small trailer will I need the 4.10 axle ratio ? Or is that for big tows? <-- depends on what small means but if you are talking 6ft trailer transporting a riding lawnmower/atv it shouldn't be a problem with any setup. I really know nothing about trailers and towing.

Rule of thumb with modern cars:

- If it bolts on, it's lemon squeezy.
- Chemical things (paint, etc.) are generally cumbersome and expensive, but not impossible; bedliner is the only meaningful example I can think of.
- If it has any sort of software component that integrates tightly with the vehicle (as opposed to simple electrical switches, lights, etc. that have nothing to do with vehicle operation), it's going to be a royal PITA if it's even possible. Typically, you're better off just trading it in and doing it right the second time.

The difference between these and older cars is that you swap that third bullet for rust. Though an argument could be made for a 2.5th bullet, since rust is arguably easier to deal with.

Unless you plan on a serious amount of aux power items, add the Aux switches from the factory. It's only $300 and besides the actual switches, it adds wiring and relays and fuses under the hood as well as easy places to make power connections inside. It makes connecting offroad lights, CB/GMRS radios, dashcams, etc so much easier. If you add it aftermarket, it will cost you at least that much just in parts, and you still won't get the interior wiring that came from the factory.

Max Tow is again, an option you almost can not afford not to get if you are getting a model it's available on. Gears, wider axles, limited slip, bigger brakes, bigger charging and cooling system, receiver hitch.... yea, technically you can add all that after the fact, but not even close to the $1200 upgrade cost from the factory.

If I had to do it over, I think I would have spent the $$$ for the better radio. Didnt need need the nav, and the 7" radio is fine for a half deaf old dude, but some of the other stuff would have been nice, and it's a pita to do after.

I had a similar time so I can go through and put my rational for each

1) Bed Liner -- its cheaper from the factory and if i was ordering a truck I'd get it, but its not a deal breaker

2) Uconnect 8.4 -- get it from the factory its expensive to add and even then is through 3rd party so you wont get full functionality

3) Headliner, decide after if you need it its easy to add and you may not need it. My red hard top stays pretty darn cool even in florida.

4)Active safety -- pretty much has to come from the factory, I required it so it was a deal breaker for me if it didnt have it

5)Trail rail -- Add it later, or even better do your own

6) AAC -- My favorite daily feature besides the sunrider. I cant go back to a car with out it

7)Aux -- technically can add it, but its a ton of work. for 300 bucks get it from the factory if you can

8) Max Tow -- Max tow is only sport (willys and freedom i think can get it since they're based off sport), but the 2 big upgrades are the wider axles and the 4.10 gears. The rubicon and mojave (and maybe the high altitude) already have the 4.10 and wider axles.

You can tow with the 3.73's its just gonna be a little slower.Really depends on what a "little trailer" is and if you are doing mountains.
