What I don't understand is the short-sightedness. Afghanistan has been fought over for what, 30, 40 years? At least? How did "you" not expect a clusterf**k of a withdrawal?

Hindsight is always 20/20, but if you're planning on pulling military out of a contested state like AFG, wouldn't you pre-emptively evacuate non-essential civilians as well?

Bagram has a long history, and it's not a small airport. The pullout wasn't secret. Handing over the keys was. "We" left Bagram in the middle of the night, unannounced. It was literally "last one out turn out the lights." The Afghanis didn't know the last US forces left.

I'm not only hugely disappointed in the clusterf**k that has happened, but also the amount of tax-payer-funded assets "we" left. I can't go buy a basic AR-15 without having a background check and "training" and a 10-day waiting period, not to mention forking over COVID/panic pricing. Yet Taliban Joe can walk into Bagram and saunter away with a $4k+ M4 (as equipped).

There, fixed it for ya. You cannot force evolution. These goat humpers will remain in the stone age for all of time. Just what they do. They don't seem to want it any other way. Sent the Soviet Union home with their tails tucked (utilizing weapons supplied by the US of course, as rocks and sticks didn't get them far). Sent the USA home with their tails tucked (utilizing weapons left behind by the Soviets, and our own). Guess it's China's turn to try their hand at converting those who do not wish to be converted.
The largest Lithium deposits on the planet are in Afghanistan and who needs Lithium more than China??? One Trillion Dollars worth of rare earth mineral deposits are located in Afghanistan. Afghans have no way to harvest any of it, being the Neanderthals that they are.
Too bad I'm not going to be around long enough to see how it all plays out for China over the next 10-20 years.
It's called "Where Empires Go To Die" for a reason, been happening since around 500 BC or so, ain't gonna change anytime soon.

As one of the vets on here, I feel safe to say that while I think some things should have been done better, I think our former administration were right to set this up and our current one was right to see it to fruition. The rapid collapse of the in power gov't and military to the Taliban are proof that staying there would have been pointless. Hopefully, we will do whatever we can to help people that want out get out.

The rapid collapse of the in power gov't and military to the Taliban are proof that staying there would have been pointless. Hopefully, we will do whatever we can to help people that want out get out.

I think it was wise to get ou as well, just poorly executed and there is no doubt that every politcal play was taken into account in the decision making process preceeding this event.
