Hey guys,

Ive recently reached out to my insurance (Geico) to discuss my coverage. I have a ton of upgrades and aftermarket parts, and wanted to see how much of that is covered - is there an option to pay x amount per month to cover x amount of upgrades, etc.

They basically told me to kick rocks, that none of my upgrades would be covered in case of an accident, and they did not offer additional coverage that I could pay for to address this. So, now I am in the market for a new insurance company. If I get into a wreck, I dont want my Jeep rebuilt as OEM and spent another ~$15,000 replacing all the stuff that should have been covered.

How are you guys handling this? Does your insurance actually cover your vehicle properly? Do you have supplemental insurance for upgrades?

Thanks.

I cannot answer any of your questions but I have Am Fam and they’ve been the cheapest insurance I have ever had. When I say cheapest I mean they were $100 less a month compared to Geico. But I’m pretty sure I have the option to add parts to the vehicle I have installed and insure them for what they’re worth. Usually it just asks about aftermarket parts and how much they cost.

Switched from State Farm to Liberty Mutual, was significantly cheaper combining everything. I am pretty sure as posted above they will cover additional parts and will just need to know how much additional coverage you need on the vehicle....

Another American Family policyholder.
I don’t have a bunch of upgrades, but their coverage is reasonable, and I’ve had zero issues with claims.

I’m with farm bureau. It was cheaper than the last company I was with. ??‍♂

I don't have upgrades covered, but when shopping around Progressive was literally half the price of Farm Bureau (who I'd always been with), State Farm, Geico, and others. They would have been my last choice just based on the name, too.

Using Geico at the moment… anyone else has quoted damn near double for liability coverage when I have maxed full coverage with Geico with $0 deductibles across the board. When I quoted to replace my old rig with the JT, it goes up by $60.00 per term, but adds “break down insurance” - sounds like a load of bull’s spit that I’ll opt out of.

As far as coverage for aftermarket parts, I’ve never considered insuring these as I have never been of the mindset that the money is just gone once it leaves my bank account.

On a separate note, I recently decided to cancel my phone insurance coverage. Why keep it? I’ve had 0 incidents in the last 4 years and paid $15.00 a month. That’s $720.00. I had an incident, paid them an extra $90.00 deductible to replace my 4 year old phone - I had the cash to pay for a new phone so why give them extra money?

Check out Travelers insurance. They quoted me 455 for 6 months. That was including 2500 in custom equipment.

That's weird.

I have Geico and it seems like they are pretty open to this. It seems like you don't buy x amount of coverage for extra parts, they can just take your parts and add them to the policy and quote it.

Not sure if there was something specific you mentioned that they didn't want to cover. Let me know because I'm curious!

American Family quoted me at $60 a month for a Mojave. Full coverage obviously, $1000 deductible I think.

Appreciate all the responses! Im doing some calling around and talking to different companies, trying to see what my options are as far as aftermarket part coverage, stated value, etc and weighing my options.

That's weird.

I have Geico and it seems like they are pretty open to this:

I asked for a list of things that are typically covered vs not so I will follow up when I get that.

I thought the same thing - when I had my Harley through Geico they covered aftermarket parts no problem. Apparently for cars its different? They specifically said winches and off-road parts I.E. bumpers and skid plates would not be covered and they dont offer additional coverage that can be purchased for that stuff.. sooo shopping time haha.
