Yeah I'm starting to question if the air cooler (intercooler) is heat soaking for some folks, on hot days when auto start/stop is enabled. and if the intercooler efficiency could be improved.
What is the real purpose of the auto start/stop?

100% could be a safety issue. On the I-10 there is a lot of trucking traffic, it is only 2 lanes, some of the emergency lanes are pretty rough. Fortunately I was mentally prepared for the derate and there wasn't any traffic for a couple miles. I actually thought I had let it cool enough, though that was based on no information. Definitely not shutting down for stops in hot weather from now on.

NHTSA is a good idea. I've already started to reach out to my dealer and Jeep support.
If you do shut down, how long do you need to wait?

Do you think having an iDrive or Pedal Commander will cause issues related to this thread - diesel owner.

It could, all they do is basically increase the torque demand for percentage of throttle used. In other words, at 1/2 throttle you will be much closer to full throttle, using more boost, therefor making more heat.

Oh please not here, too! It comes up in a diesel derating thread with 20 other threads dedicated to it......
I posted the epa rules about it among other details.

Emissions regulations for all new cars. Reduces idling at stoplights thus reducing overall emissions by a fraction.
Google edmunds real world testing for facts not hate and speculation and guesses.

I haven't bought a new car in over 40 years or a used car older than a 2005. I'm sorry if I'm not as educated in the field of automechanics as all of you. Maybe you might want to take your knowledge and expertise and help people out rather than put them down. If not then maybe just don't reply.

I brought that up because people seem to introduce the ESS in every possible thread when there are several already dedicated to it. This being a diesel thread about the diesel issues, heating, de-rating, etc. - and after all of the emotional debates on ESS over the past weeks - here it comes again in a diesel thread.

In addition to your comment I'm new to this forum or any forum for that matter. I'm sorry if I haven't read ever thread and comment made. Not everyone who buys a jeep is a mechanic.

I commented because it was mentioned in a post.

Wow, I made through all 26 pages of this thread and have a few thoughts.
No I will not get the diesel, far too many concerns to pay the premium price for.
Did Jeep not really want the JT to be a tow vehicle above 3-4000lbs?
If they really did, would they not have had a very simple feature like the tow/haul mode found on so many other tow vehicles?
Why can I not get a factory brake controller when I do an online build?

Lastly, unrelated to the JT, why are so many trailer towing drivers going over 65mph?
Unless you are changing out the stock common “S” rated trailer tires, you are at a big risk for tire failure because 65 mph is the max safe rating.
I have passed plenty of disabled trailers with flats, delaminations, that went flying by me earlier in the trip being pulled by heavy duty trucks that could do 80+ mph without a problem. Seen a few in the ditches destroyed too, because when you lose a tire at those speeds, things get bad real fast.
There is a saying……”If you knew you were driving to your death, would you be in such a hurry?”

Depends on the trailer - the RV and travel trailer forums are full of people who say their tires are rated 75. So it's best to look at your own particular tires. Some are rated 65, some 75.
But STILL, 65 is about the highest speed limit I saw in the list of STATE TOWING SPEED LIMITS which is different than the posted speed limit signs.
Iowa, for example, the Interstates are 70 but the towing speed limit is 65.
So frankly, the speed should be limited due to LAW, not just tire rating.

Apparently they don't need tow mode in these - the transmission seems to adapt - mine did.
I DO miss that mode switch, but these apparently sense.
Mine adapted after a short time of driving. I noticed it automatically applied the brakes to slow me on a hill when I had cruise set. It sucked towing my trailer empty, oddly enough, but when I loaded it down after a few miles it was doing fantastic.

I have a MOPAR brake controller made for the JT. Dealers have them, dealers install them and I thought a few months ago they could be ordered with them (maybe the chip shortage has messed that up)
Mine is integrated into the dash and is plugged right into the truck's harness.

I towed 4900 pounds at 65 mph just fine and got 13.8 mpg with my 3.6

I erred and should have stated ST RV trailer tires where the vast majority are rated at 65 mph. Also many are “Chinese bombs”.
As for the transmission “apparently” and “seems” to adapt on its own to trailer towing, I have no first hand experience with that.
As for the brake controller, it’s been a peeve of mine since the inception of the JT. Yes it can purchased separately and is a fairly easy install once the Jeep is in your possession, but not from the factory?
Odd. It’s basically a Redarc, which in itself is a very tidy unit and integrates nicely in the 12v outlet.
My concern is back to the diesel, which I had hoped was as capable as the Ram 1500 3.0. My 3 or 4 short excursions for camping in my 5000lb trailer seems now to lend itself more to the 3.6. The thing that has confused me most on the Jeep online build is how closely all the models are in relation to price, depending on the options.
Other than the 4.10’s in the Max tow and Rubicon, the rest are just different bling so to say.
For my needs, the 6000 lb tow rating may work out with the 3.6 as this will also be a daily driver.
Still figuring, great reads here.
Thanks
Rick

It's not a Redarc - the wiring harness end is the same as Tekonsha. (but that doesn't matter, just semantics.)
I'd have to read back through forum posts but I'm fairly sure some have said they ordered their Gladiator with the brake controller installed factory.
I would say after towing with mine it did adapt. It was a different animal after a little while on the road and the trip back was smooth as could be, shifting better than my Silverado did IN tow mode. That impressed me - my Chevy in tow mode had more shifting back and forth and hit higher RPMs than this little Pentastar.
So I'm not sure what's up with SOME people and the diesel. Since the Pentastar is towing all over the place just fine - what's going on.
Then you have WXMan who tows with a JT diesel and has zero troubles at all.
THAT makes sense.
My 3.6 never left normal temps as far as coolant and transmission temps. Oil temps stayed nice and low as well. In fact, I'd say none of the temperatures on my JT 3.6 were ever out of ordinary normal driving ranges.
