I see it as a win and look forward to a more powerful, electric based Jeep. I'm not afraid of change.

I just read the interview. Handled well I think. If they don’t move in this direction, other makers will pass them by. I’m looking forward to seeing pure electric models soon. I think a pure electric Cherokee or similar would sell quite well, as long as the range exceeds 200 miles, but ideally 300+. The current 4xE drivetrain is far from perfect, but I’m giving them the chance to fix it in the future.

Are Chevy and ford un-American as well then? Both are pushing hard for full electric in the next several years. Americans are supposed to be innovators. When did it become un-American to try to make things better?
Sure. Why not? Electric cars aren't practical for a lot of applications. Do you have solar on your house?

We did for many years in our last house. This one will get it within a year or so.

Hasn't anyone looked at the new EPA rules? Even harsher than was expected or asked for by the administration. The threshold for electric is getting lower and lower, emissions rules are getting tougher and tougher - it will come to a point where if they don't comply, they won't be able to sell here. Europe is even harsher - and Jeep must also sell there to survive. So it's not all the USA - if Jeep can't sell in Europe, they'll die and the members of this forum can't keep them afloat. If it wasn't for the non-Wrangler and non-truck, Jeep would already be dead.
Better thank those families who bought Cherokee and Grand Cherokee - without those sales, you really think you would have your wonderful Jeep?

The 2 door Wrangler is dead in Europe because there's no room for batteries - so Jeep is concentrating on the 4 door. In some places you can't even drive an ICE driven vehicle.

Iam amazed at how incredibly naive people are. Electric can be awesome for sure, but the technology is not there yet. At the same time it is inevitable that the collective of people in this country get exactly what they deserve for the time and effort they put into governing choices.

It's a world-wide economy now. Jeep MUST sell in other countries to survive. Europe has stricture rules than the USA, and some countries even more strict. If Jeep can't develop vehicles that will sell on the world market, they'll fold. It's really that easy.

Im skeptical just like most owners are. The 4xe’s pitiful 21miles on EV is just a slap in the face for what that thing costs.

BUT

I enjoy how markets shift and believe that since every brand is doing this we will see a good product a couple years from now. Competition is good for development.

i just hope to still be able to tow with the electric gladiator when it comes out l

Would I take an electric vehicle out on the trails? Absolutely not.

Would I pick one up for my daily driver? In a heartbeat.

Sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes you need a wrench. Ive been looking for a decent deal on an EV for 6 months now, to save miles / gas money / extend the life of my JT. If I could pick up another Jeep to fill that need, that would be sweet.

I could lease an EV for the same cost as my current monthly gas bill for the JT. Id be much happier if that money was going towards a commuter with lower maintenance that would also dramatically extend the life of my JT.

Leasing drops your payment, but if you buy an EV, you get a huge tax credit. Depending on make and model, you can get up to $7,500 back federally. Then many states provide more. EV purchases in CO got an additional $2,500 in 2021. That’s 10k off the purchase price.

Fix the charging issues. Time to charge, amount of infrastructure, make the batteries better.....
While I'm at it.....Give me a solar panel for my hood that charges my jeep in the back country. Put electric motors on my overland trailer so it reduces the amount of drain on my battery....Let it drive itself.
I agree. It's the future. Motors on all corners and all that off roading goodness. Still want to see someone lift a Rivan and do the standard off roader mods.

I get it. Some people have to be early adopters to test the tech and make it fiscally viable.

But I watched @Summitdan have his issues. I'd love an EV mode to get to work my commute is stupid short and prevents a diesel. I'd never get it to it's duty cycle. But cold days? Right now it would not be functional.

Agreed on all counts. I will say that the issues we had with the 4xE were not experienced on any of the 3 plugins we owned prior. All worked great, even in winter. Jeep doesn’t have a perfect 1st gen plug-in hybrid drivetrain, but it will get better. As a general discussion about whether the technology is viable, other makers have shown that it is for almost a decade now.
