How safe is a Tazer Reflash. Would you do it away from home?

Hi all,

I received my Tazer yesterday but haven't had time to install it. I'm leaving for a couple of days shortly but was thinking of bringing it with me on my trip and installing it during some down time tomorrow.

Am I nuts? Has anyone heard of a bad "install" causing a problem with the car? i.e. bricking the car so it wan't start or drive?

Thanks,

don

Tazer does not flash your truck, it is pretty safe.

Thanks. Like I've said a couple of times today. I know enough to know what I don't know. ha. I wasn't sure if it had the ability to really screw things up and leave me stranded.

Thanks again.

What are you trying to do with it? To just install it/marry, it's all on the tazer, not the truck. To update settings like tires and stuff, I'd do it at home. But don't know why. Just better safe than sorry, I guess

Anything you screw up becomes unscrewed up once you unplug it (live functions) or unmarry it (tires, gears, etc). But I remember it scared the heck out of me when I first installed mine, because by default it enabled line lock, and I had my foot on the brake pedal. The brake pedal went soft, and the abs light came on. Disabled line lock, and was good to go.

That would be my thing - I'd want it to have no defaults except all defaults as far as the truck is concerned. In other words, plug it in and it does nothing at all, just sits there until or unless you tell it to do something and default to that setting for the future. Line lock is fine - but why default it to on?
That would be my only real beef with how it works.
But since it doesn't actually change any code in the truck (unless you tell it to like adding passive entry, auto-high beam, that sort of thing which is really only changing SETTINGS and not anything operationally) if there are ever problems, remove, truck is back to stock except for settings changes you have made on purpose.

Based on my experience, I would install it during the trip. Update it with the latest firmware from Z-automotive before you leave from your computer. The update is fast and easy, and the newest version has "turn assist" like the new Bronco. I tried it, it works great.

Note: I have a manual Rubicon, and the "rock crawl" mapped to a cruise button is fantastic in the rocks !

Hopefully Zautomotive learned a lesson with that update.
Default settings should always be stock/oem. Never turn ON some new additional feature by default, no matter how cool the developer thinks it is. The next update fixed that.

Absolutely. I was about to panic, until I did a search on here, and found others with the same issue.

I don't have a Tazer and I don't rock crawl (yet to both) but I do have a manual JTR. I would like to know more about this "rock crawl" feature you speak of.

• Rock Crawl: Press and hold the left arrow and cruise set(-) button, and pump the brakes twice. The Jeep will hold using all four brakes while you can work the pedals to apply torque, and release the buttons when you’re ready to move. “RockCrawl” will be displayed in the cluster

IS that like locking the inside rear wheel? Sort of like you do on a tractor to spin circles, pivoting on a rear wheel that never moves because it's locked?

If so, won't work on LSD, I assume.

Here is how it works. Let's say you are rock crawling with a spotter and you have to crawl and stop, crawl and stop.... With a stick, normally when stopped on a boulder, you have to use the emergency brake to stop from rolling back while working the clutch in granny gear (1st gear, 4wD low)... With the rock crawl enabled on a quick access cruise button, you stop on top of the rock, foot on brake and clutch, then, press the rock crawl mapped cruise button, and all 4 disc brakes lock, you casually take your foot off the brake, then, start working the clutch in 1st gear, and when it starts grabbing, you let your finger off the rock crawl button and the truck moves forward. No emergency brake to manage to stop from moving backwards.... and the rock crawl is much safer in that it locks all 4 disc brakes, instead of the flimsy emergency brake which only enables the rear brake. Brilliant !!

I used it during two badge of Honor boulder trails at Big Bear - Gold mountain, and Holcomb Creek trail. It was a game changer for me. After working it all day on two trails, you get used to it... It does take a little time to train yourself, so, I recommend practicing before using it on a tough trail.
