I have to admit, I'm not sure this is wrong, but it sure seems odd. Dealer in Twin Falls will be getting my new Gladiator from a drop-off point in Utah. I can only imagine that would be a couple hundred miles, at least.

Is that odd to you? I really want to make sure the new vehicle break-in requirements are to be adhered to.

I think I am going to ask if they are trucking it here or DRIVING it here....

He said they will do a "RUSH delivery" to get it here asap....... Just seems odd.

Hope I'm not over thinking this....A quick note, we bought a new unit that was finished building about a week ago.

Heck I had my '97 Ranger transferred over 300 miles from another dealer, in state. Break-in back then meant a lot more than it does these days. I changed to full synthetic on that truck at 500 miles, didn't break in / increase gas mileage until 18,000 miles later!

The main distribution hub for many western states is in Utah and vehicles are typically trucked to their final destination. I would just ask the dealer, what are they going to do? Not sell you the truck?

Thanks for that about Utah. It just seemed very strange. Unfortunately, I cannot see the data about the vehicle delivery date. I did look it up and it does have the Build Sheet & Window sticker. Just I feel like I'm in the dark.

I'm already getting Welcome data for the Jeep via JEEP WAVE. They keep asking me to start my Registration....But, I don't have it yet!

Mine has been sitting in SLC since the 12th, 784 miles away.
Has to leave the rail yard in SLC to go to Boise 339 miles from there, where I will have to fly 719 miles to from Fresno, to only have to turn around and drive743 miles home.
I really wish it would get to the dealership as I’m tired of spending money on something I don’t have. Gonna take me a minute to stick/clamp/bolt/screw all of the stuff in the garage onto the Gladiator.

Former salesman. Used to do new car swaps all the time. Never saw anything strange about it. Depending on distance and dealership policy they may even employ a couple partially retired guys a couple days a week who do nothing but drive dealer swaps.

Ever test driven a new car with a few hundred miles on it? Probably the other end of the dealer swap. One of the two cars swapped is typically already sold, the other not.

I appreciate your comment about car swap's all the time.

I Want to break the car in correctly myself. Speed limits around here are 80mph.

Owner's manual states:

  1. Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.
  2. While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in.
  3. Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and should be avoided.

Honestly, of all manufactures, Jeep has the most tolerable break in measures. Really, the worst thing that could happen is a driver gets on the highway and sets cruise control. I bet that is what they do.

Seems shady when a truck can haul it

If someone is driving it back on the dealers behalf, just get it out of your head they are going to follow any break in speed and loading limitations. They may give you lip service that they will.

Honestly though, the refrain from towing during break in is more important than worrying about the rest IMHO.

Just keep in mind that whatever mileage is on it at delivery, that is where warranty actually starts from.

It's common practice and has been common for decades.
You'll very often see 2 or 3 vehicles being driven down the interstates here from one dealer to another - sort of a convoy of new vehicles. Happens all the time.

Don't sweat that "break-in" process.
That's literally impossible to follow, and bothers me - it isn't really breaking in at lazy driving like that.
I picked mine up and drove it- in heavy commute traffic at 65-70 mph and drove it like I always would.

I've built and broke in more engines over the years......... the ideal is - VARY the speed.
And - vary the load on the engine a bit. Don't lug it, but don't over-rev it, and make a few heavy accelerations now and then.
Do not drive it at 55 and hang there. That's worse than hitting 70, then dropping down, then speeding up and so on.
You hang that thing at less than 55 and that engine will be doing what, 1600 rpm? Bad.
Are you sure that's from the current book? I can't think of any place where you will live through driving under 55 or 50 for 300 miles.

Nope, picked mine up and drove it.
VARY the speed. That's critical.
Don't set cruise, don't drive like granny.

The freeway here is on a desert. They will set the cruise and fly! And that’s what I don’t want. Dammit, these rigs are kinda iffy as it is on reliability. I just have hopes for a long life and admit I’m kinda picky.

I truely appreciate all who have contributed to my question. I’ll let you know how it goes….

Iffy? You've been reading too much internet.

When you get it, vary the speed, load it now and then, some hard accelerations without over-revving. It will be fine.

Here's some engine break-in info I have -

Jeep Gladiator Dealers drive new vehicle from different state to your dealership? ford-break-in

That's from the 1950s.

And this is how you broke an engine in on a dyno after a rebuild -

So - define break-in...............

I agree with Shodowspapa. It seems to me people worry to much about things. It will be fine, I have had lots of new cars not once did I worry about breaking it in. New gad an issue with any of the. Had new pickups show up when harvest starts and have put them right work hauling headed and fuel trailer. Just service when you are supposed to and drive it.
