Seems that battery rip-off to unsuspecting customers is a common dealer behaviour in most parts of the world.

The wife of a friend recently payed arround 1000 $ for a battery replacement on a shitty Renault.

Not familiar with the Renault, but I'd still say it's terrible engineering. A few years ago my company car was a Ford escape. Battery died. I'm looking at the thing tucked way back under the cowl trying to figure out how to get it out. Quick YouTube search. Step 1...remove windshield wipers? Step 2 remove upper cowl. Step 3 remove lower cowl. Step 4...remember it's a company car and not my $900 the dealer is going to charge to change the battery because you have to disassemble half the vehicle to do so. Step 5, drink a beer and remind myself of every Ford I've ever owned and why I'll never own another one. It sounds excessive when you think I'm terms of the 1st hundred years of vehicle production where you could change a battery in 5 minutes in the auto parts store parking lot with a Leatherman. Unfortunately they have decided that inaccessible maintenance items are a good idea.

Let this be a lesson to everyone - don't trust Jeep dealers.
Glenn E. Thomas Jeep in Long Beach, CA just charged me the following to repair a non-op ESS system that left me stranded:

Fuse - $99
Battery x1 - $454
Battery x1 - $240
Push Pin x4 - $31.80
Rivet x4 - $51.20
Labor - $375

I needed it fixed and was in a hurry. Yes, I'm an impatient fool for agreeing to this. Regretting it now. Hey, @JeepCares, does this sound excessive to you?
At this point I feel like there's no other option but public shaming.
This is the same dealer that killed my batteries, then told me I had water in my fuel, which killing my batteries caused, they also said I had an extremely dirty air filter which was just replaced. In a nut shell I caught the service advisor and service manager lying to me several times. They had my truck for a month. I told the service manager is so many colorful metaphors. II I don't give an f if you have to push my Fing truck out the front gate, I'm picking the Fing thing up. They replaced my batteries on their dime. Took it to Tuttle click Jeep in Irvine to fix the problem I originally had.

Um, I did both batteries, on both my JTs, and didn’t think it was labor intensive at all. I guess it’s all relative.

it was by no means hours, more like 1 hour. Even if I had used manual ratchets, I don’t think I would have been beyond 90 minutes. In a pinch, I would just head to the local parts store, buy the batteries, buy a socket set and screwdriver set, and just do the work in the parking lot for under $600. There would even be extra to hit the local watering hole on the way home.
This would have been my usual course of action (including the post-fix watering hole, LOL) but symptoms of when it died had me stumped because not familiar with ESS systems. Assumed it might be more than the battery because it died without warning, I couldn't jump start it, just lit up every warning like a Christmas tree and gave me ominous-looking code errors. Transmission refused to shift to neutral even with the override. Couldn't push it out of the way because I had a 6,500lb travel trailer behind it. Finally just put the transfer case in neutral, put a tow strap over my shoulder, and started waving down trucks to at least get me out of the intersection. Of course only another Jeep would stop and help. Yeah, I was in no mood to get under the hood at that point.

Not bad. Labor at roughly 2.0 hours. Fuse price is excessive. Batteries are pricey in general. Not too bad
This was my thought as well. You got the MOPAR-markup on parts but that's normal.

Not sure there's much to shame on here.

That is still a lot of batteries having to get recycled. Just awesome for the environment. We have to pick our poison. This type of equipment is causing the cost of vehicles to skyrocket. Not just the initial purchase but the maintenance side as well. Some people can barely afford a used car much less a new one with this type of technology. The sad part is, this type of technology is becoming the "used cars" for the people that can't afford to drive it, not to mention repair it. The OP may bitch about the cost, but obviously he can pay the bill. The poor chap in thectrailer park will say " I guess I"ll get it fix in a few months". $1300 is a chunk of change to most.

The people making decisions on our behalf, can afford the initial cost and the upkeep. They are not thinking about the one that just get by.
Plus no lawmakers thinking about what this does to the used car market. Many perfectly serviceable vehicles will be scrapped when all of this fancy expensive tech stops working and you can't register the thing anymore. Look at how many cars get totaled or get slapped with a salvage title just because the airbags were deployed.

More of a warning for those in a panic when they get stuck with a dead Jeep: Check the batteries first.

I lost a bolt in the rear diff cover, went to the dealer and they wanted $48! Went to Ace Hardware and the same thing was $.78. Screw the dealers.
Paid $83 for $10 worth of rivets and $99 for a $25 fuse. Yes, indeed - Screw them. Lesson learned.

Sounds about right. I think in my old posts you can still see where a tech at this same place forgot to put the cap back on the coolant reservoir after an oil change causing it to overheat when boiled out and painted the entire engine and underside pink. Told they'll refill it free and good to go! I'm like, no... You're going to flush and refill, inspect everything for damage, do a compression check, and extend my warranty. No problems since, but man, what a hassle.
Oh, and also tried to charge for a tire rotation when I was clearly told they won't touch aftermarket wheels. "Gee, how did that happen! My bad."

OH! And one more! They started work on the wrong truck one time, and only stopped because they couldn't find the key to that guy's wheel locks and called me to ask where it was at - answer: "I DON'T HAVE WHEEL LOCKS! WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?"

Ugh, I need a new place to take this thing but still have prepaid services to do.

consumers will always modify their purchases. my 02 mercury would not pass state inspection. my buddies brand new diesel truck with a delete and tune is probably less environmentally friendly vs ESS or my mercury (as it currently sits). My current JT is modified with an AFE exhuast, bc i just like the tone.

I am all for saving the environment but being told by corporations that consumers/general public are the problem is the real crime here.

Rabble rabble.

Sometimes you are not in a position to take care of things yourself. I have broke down 1000 miles from home and -17f outside. That's when the everyone at the dealership takes a turn on you while the service manager holds you down. I haven't bought a Chevy since then. I had another similar experience with a Ford dealership in 2014. Haven't bought another Ford since then either. It doesn't make a difference to the manufacturers, but it sure does make me feel better.

Dealerships are not running a charity. Everybody is a socialist when having to pay out of pocket and a capitalist when selling.

Need to find my flame suit around here somewhere.......................

Mainly curious to see what others paid. Was having a bad day, just needed it fixed. And yes, I did agree to it over the phone, but... was kind of expecting a laundry list of stuff for that money, not a couple batteries, a fuse, and a handful of rivets. Hard to think straight after waiting 2 hours for a tow truck, finding someone to tow my trailer home, and then relief to learn it's just the stupid ESS acting up (everything locked up, no power, no cranking, couldn''t get it in neutral, had to put the transfer case in neutral to have a passing Jeep yank the whole rig and trailer to side street.)

I had both batteries replaced at the dealership. I have the tow package with the AUX switches. The total was $782.50. I believe they use a slightly larger AUX battery with the factory AUX switches.
