Having eaten two 3.8's in my old JK (one at 56,000 the other at 104,000), I am keeping a VERY keen ear out for any sign of ticking for this 3.6. Even though I'm barely at 1,000 miles, this thread had me outside, under my jeep, over the engine, LISTENING for anything....Time to take a break from the internet.

I went through the consumption testing at 24k on the clock. I had changed the oil and full (5qt) then took it to the dealer for making all kinds of racket. On arrival there, 1400mi into the change, I was over a quart low and no signs of any leaks, nothing.

So roughly 1.5qt low, they initiated the monitoring and I paid for a new oil change, then came back in 1000 miles and had them re-check with dye in the system etc., and no consumption, leaks, evidence of it disappearing anywhere :/

Nevertheless, I don't have a warm-fuzzy at this point. They gave me a clear blessing and documented it all etc. The dealer mentioned I can bring it back in another 1800 miles to have them monitor and take a look to be sure all is well, but I'm fully convinced the route to go is extended warranty and cross-fingers at this point. Oh, and I have to go back next week to the body shop to see if my newly found rust bubbles is "warrantable" and have them fix that on the bottom edge of my tail gate now. Inside voice, and counting to three......... GRRRRR:mad:

Since we know it's not a magic engine that makes things simply disappear into nothing, and these don't run on molecular decay of any sort - if it ain't leaking, it's being consumed.
It's really pretty simple. That much loss would be quite obvious if it was a leak.
A quart of oil sprayed around the engine will make a #$%@ of a mess.
My question is this - "no consumption"........... they are saying it's not consuming it?
Tell them this -
It's either leaking
or
it's being consumed.
And if they say it's not boiling off, it's not leaking - tell them there's one choice - CONSUMPTION, and I don't mean tuberculosis.
Multiple choices and they have a 50-50 shot at getting it right by simply guessing.
No leaks - it's burning it.
So they need to check that TSB for the faulty PCV valve, or they need to run tests like leak-down and such.

I think you know the answer since you don't have spots on the floor where you park it.

Exactly. I will take it back in 1800mi and make sure my point is known. It won't just vanish, and it needs to be handled; also considering the timing of where I'm at warranty wise/mileage etc., they're not stupid but neither am I. It needs to be addressed and corrected.

My 2020 had the tick along with P0300 code, after replacing rockers and intake cam a new motor was installed. 10k miles later and the Ticking is back.

Could I trouble you gentlemen for an internet opinion? I can only really hear anything with the hood open, maybe a slight muffle when closed and nothing in the cab.

Sounds normal to me with the usual fuel injector noise.

I just had to take my 2021 in for the lifter issues and the dealer confirmed it during diagnostics that it wasn't acting right. Hadn't pulled it apart yet as I left the dealership so don't know for sure what they found yet. Only 13k miles on it.

Sounds like I am not alone with this issue. Started noticing an abnormal tick above 2500rpm. No codes (other than unrelated issues that were already there), oil levels good, everything seems to check out so all signs point to the lash adjusters and rockers. Noise seems to be coming primarily from the passenger bank, but if I am having one side replaced, might as well do both while it is torn down. 67300 miles. Best part is the valve covers were off at 59700 miles to replace valve cover seals, PCV, and a few other seals under warranty due to an oil leak and consumption issue.

Jeep Gladiator 3.6 Engine Tick IMG_7629

I figured I would follow up in here since I haven’t seen any newer threads on this topic. I had my rockers and lifters replaced this week (and spark plugs and some seals while everything was apart) and it took out my passenger intake cam as well.

Passenger side (right bank, bank 1, odd numbered cylinders) is the "typical" one to go on the 2020s.
Interesting that both high and low lift lobes look like heck from here. The high lift (center lobes) the worse like almost always.

If referring to this -
Jeep Gladiator 3.6 Engine Tick 1680573976023

yeah, that journal looks crappy.
The whole thing is scarred and galled. The lobes are toast - eaten away, and that journal looks like heck.

I'd be concerned about where'd the metal go that came off that high lift center lobe. Even low lift lobes where the rollers run look odd.

Well that suggests an oiling issue doesnt it?
