Happy 4th everyone! Finished a trail ride on 3B in Eureka Springs, AR yesterday. Quite a fiasco, but nonetheless still adrenaline-pumping fun.

Jeep Gladiator 3B Eureka Springs Trail Report - Exhaust Damage on Rubicon 8062

Their trail markings are Green (Easy), Blue (Moderate) and Black (Extreme), so no real differences there; but then they have Polaris & Polaris w/ and X, mainly to help prevent their rentals from going on trails deemed too risky or damaging to their own equipment. The wife and I hit nothing but Greens and Blues as their Blacks were 10 out of 10. Even with a 6" lift, skid plates, 37s and a winch, I dont think I would be comfortable with most of them. The most disappointing issue we had was that all of their points of interest required taking Blacks. We tried every direction (like 5 separate trails) to get to a waterfall, but found every one of them was a no-go.

The Rubicon did awesome as expected otherwise. But as we finally gave up getting to the waterfall and rode a few trails we hadn't hit yet, we were heading back on their main route, some of which was still very high Blue areas. As I was making a sharp turn to follow the route back, I turned and hit something that felt like we had just rammed something with the bumper. The wife and I both looked at each other like WTF. Got out to look, and I had turned right over a cedar stump sticking up that had been right in my blind spot.

It perfectly slipped past my diff pumpkin and I rammed clean into it. It hit on the exhaust elbow in front of the skid bar. It pisses me off so much that they designed this exhaust like this. I'm probably just going to have this section cut out and then beefed up a bit. But they really need to have better protection for this area, especially since the skid bar is RIGHT BEHIND it, providing no defense whatsoever.

Great trip otherwise, but hitting something like this, not even on a technical area that we were on high alert for, is a kick in the nuts.

Ouch!

Good idea to replace it.
Yeah, I am going to replace the exhaust at some point, but not until I figure out what skid plate I'm going for. I also dont want an exhaust that's any louder than the OEM, but dont want to pay the ridiculous price for OEM exhaust. Stainless will probably be what I go for, whether I have to upgrade the muffler for quiet afterwards will have to be determined.

Bad things happen when you don’t expect them. Like when you walk a bad section of trail and are worried about a big obstacle and overlook an 18” rock mid trail.
I hate stumps. Found Jericho in NH to be full of them.

As most would say, you gotta pay to play. Even the most experienced trail riders are bound to get damage. I accept that when I take a stock $60K+ truck out on trails, dings are going to happen, but my Limited Commander's skid plates provide better protection than this.

I'll have a good stock exhaust shortly, when they pull the stock engine to replace with a Hemi...

Well, if I haven't bought anything yet, I'd certainly would be interested for the right price.

On another note, I will be jumping for the factory Hemi JT after I retire from the AF. Never wanted anything else since the 392 Wrangler first came out.

That's what they've told me for 18 years, though I'm still unsure with my vacation "deployments" and my steak & lobster dfac meals 😋

Yhea, didn't see many of those...But then again, didn't see many DFACs either. Nevertheless we are brothers, all of us who served.

I noticed the desert flight suit pic and the fact you're in Kentucky. You dont happen to be a SOAR vet? I did some rapid infil/exfil training with the 5th quite a few times. Used to watch flight ops out there. They do some absolutely crazy sh&@!

I will definitely get a copy of that.

Also, just a cool tidbit for you: I worked security for the Lone Survivor film set and chatted with Peter Berg while I was there. We discussed Luttrel's book a lot and he put me on it before the movie came out.

I was also in the background of a movie scene hanging out on a fire bottle in front of a MC-130 😁
